Marvin Johnson definitely didn’t show Ipswich Town what they were missing in their win over Sheffield Wednesday.
Marvin Johnson was linked with what was thought to be his ‘dream move’ to Portman Road in January, with the 33-year-old offered a potential route into the Premier League towards the end of his career.
The winger has featured in the Scottish Premiership, Championship, League One and the National League, but is yet to make the step up to the English top flight.
After a ‘fantastic’ first half of the campaign, Ipswich came in with a £1 million bid for Johnson. However, he ended up remaining at Hillsborough.
This weekend’s clash was the first time he was to come up against the Tractor Boys since the transfer window, and the visitors would have been eyeing him up to see whether they made a mistake in failing to land the veteran.
They could well be thinking they made a lucky escape though, with Johnson performing far from his best in the 6-0 hammering.
For the most part, the winger has performed brilliantly on the left-side of a back five and Ipswich’s interest came as no surprise. However, yesterday’s display will leave his chances of playing in the Premier League dwindling.
Johnson had 57 touches against Ipswich, but failed to do much with it. He managed zero successful crosses or headers, lost possession a whopping 14 times and managed only one interception and one tackle.

Sofascore handed Johnson a 6 rating which was the lowest on the pitch, while Sheffield Star slammed him even further with a 3 rating.
Journalist Alex Miller wrote: “Touch was off along with his radar from the off. Seemed to have an issue with his footing – and he wasn’t the only one. Recovered a touch in the second half. A real off day for a player otherwise in good form.”
Johnson has been so important under Danny Rohl this term, but like most of the team, he looked so off the pace against a team desperate to return to the automatic promotion spots.
It’s unclear whether the attacker will have remained hopeful of moving further up the chain this summer, but yesterday’s display certainly didn’t help his case.
Kieran McKenna may have lost interest in him by now, but Danny Rohl definitely appreciate Johnson’s talent and he is likely to remain a vital part of his plans if he decides to stay this summer.
It’s time to dust themselves off and go again against Swansea, while the Owls will undoubtedly have faith in Johnson to redeem himself against the Welsh outfit.
