Danny Rohl’s damning Sheffield Wednesday revelation shows how poor they were against Preston

Danny Rohl had plenty to say about Sheffield Wednesday’s performance against Preston North End on Saturday.

Sheffield Wednesday fans have maybe never seen Danny Rohl so fed up after performance since his arrival at Hillsborough in October 2023.

The German looked almost lost for words at times during the game against Preston, with Marvin Johnson leaving Rohl fuming in the first half as he let Liam Palmer’s stray pass go out of play.

That moment, and Rohl’s face, summed up the first half performance from Wednesday. But Rohl’s three changes at the break gave the Owls a better foothold on the game, with Michael Smith scoring the equaliser after Josh Windass missed a penalty.

Speaking after the game, Rohl went on to reveal that he considered making substitutions as early as 15 minutes into the game against Preston, highlighting just how awful they were in that first 45.

Danny Rohl eyed Sheffield Wednesday substitutions after 15 minutes vs Preston

Speaking to Football Heaven after full-time against Preston, Rohl didn’t try to hide what was a poor all round performance from his side.

He was then asked why some of his substitutes were out warming up well before half-time. Rohl revealed that he considered making changes after just 15 minutes of the game, with Wednesday being that poor.

The Owls boss said: “I thought after 15 minutes to change something. Then it was a little bit better. And then, I must say, when you sub someone before half-time then it’s very hard.”

Rohl later added: “I feel this after 15 minutes that some players were not ready today, to make this step.”

Danny Rohl got the midfield dilemma all wrong vs Preston

The big dilemma for Rohl going into the game against Preston was what to do in midfield, with Barry Bannan suspended.

Liam Palmer stepped in and captained the side. But he was brought off at the break, with Sheffield Wednesday fans critical of Palmer’s performance against Preston.

Svante Ingelsson came on as well, with Anthony Musaba the other. They did improve the flow of Wednesday’s attacking play and the Owls could have won it in the end, should Windass have scored that penalty.

Rohl continues to save points with his half-time changes. But there’s a sense that he might be getting some key calls wrong from the off, as was the case against Preston.
