One Sheffield Wednesday attacker must seize the opportunity of paying against Grimsby Town.

Danny Rohl’s side will be looking to ensure that they don’t suffer a third successive defeat following losses against Sunderland and Leeds United in the Championship, with an away trip to Grimsby Town awaiting the Owls.

It is expected that there will be changes in the side in every position as Rohl will look to rest key players for the league.

Sheffield Wednesday managed to coast through the first round after an away 2-1 victory against Hull City, despite 11 changes to the team that had previously beat Wayne Rooney’s Plymouth Argyle 4-0 in an absolute demolition job to kick-off the Championship season at Hillsborough Stadium.

The away win at the MKM Stadium saw former Manchester United striker Charlie McNeill bag a brace, the first of which came just a minute into his competitive debut for the Owls, and the youngster will be hoping to be given another opportunity to showcase his abilities for Sheffield Wednesday.

Charlie McNeill must seize opportunity in Sheffield Wednesday v Grimsby Town

The Owls’ new striker will be expected to start against Grimsby Town, with him hoping to build on what was a brilliant performance against Hull City last time out in the cup.

With the signings of Jamal Lowe and Ike Ugbo, cup action is all that McNeill is likely going to get, and as a result he must make sure he seizes the opportunity to show that he is up to the task of leading the line for the Owls.

It is crucial that he is able to perform and and takes his opportunities, which may not lead to starting in the league, but he would certainly end up being in contention of being in the squad and potentially getting utilised from off the bench.

Charlie McNeill could become an unlikely hero for Sheffield Wednesday

When McNeill was brought in, he had just two loan spells in League One and Two which weren’t entirely successful, therefore he was never expected to make such an impact in the cup against Championship opposition.

If he shows exactly what was showcased against Hull City, there is every chance that he will continue to get opportunities, and the following weeks could see him surprisingly in-and-around the league side, something that will not have been expected following the signings of Lowe and Ugbo.

He has already succeeded in taking the first chance he got, and that will only help him towards staking his claim to potentially start for the Owls in the league.

The signing was almost written off from the start and was assumed to be one for the future, but his present abilities go far beyond someone who should be sat rotting on the bench.
