One key Sheffield Wednesday star has admitted that he would like to stay at the club beyond the summer.
Sheffield Wednesday are in a position of major doubt right now as they try to save their Championship status.
The Owls have spent a majority of the season in the relegation zone, but now sit only three points from safety after winning three of their last four games.
Their future in the second tier remains unclear, while a majority of the first team don’t even know whether they will be at Hillsborough beyond this summer anyway.
Sheffield Wednesday have eleven players on their books that are out of contract at the end of the season, while a further seven will see their loan spell come to an end.
Danny Rohl has already made it clear that he wants every player to put their full focus on the remaining 12 games and to deal with contract issues later, so it is likely that decisions on player’s futures wont be made until it is confirmed which league the Owls will be in.
Despite the uncertainty at the club, Will Vaulks has admitted that he would ‘love’ to sign a new deal.
Speaking to media (quotes via The Star), he said: “I think the club is in a position – and this is an assumption, I’ve not been told – where we’re unsure where we’re going to be at, but I personally haven’t had any contact from the club on the contract situation. All I can do is play as well as I possibly can for the football club – which I’ll do until the end of my contract whenever that may be – and hopefully there are discussions to be had. That’s for the club to decide, though, I can only control the football – that’s something you learn over the years.
“You only get contracts or moves by doing well on the pitch, and hopefully at the end of the season we’re in this league and the club want to talk to me. But if they don’t then that’s the club’s choice. I’d love to be here, but it’s not always up to us as players – even if some people think that it is…
“There are a lot of questions for everybody at the moment with the club – I don’t know when the manager’s contract is until… What league we’re going to be in is massive for the club. For me, I signed in League One and I know the size of the fanbase, the size of the club, and I love living here – so if I had a choice to stay then I would if the contract is right.
“I’m not talking about loads more money, I’m just talking about it being right. But yeah, that’d be great and I’m sure as the season comes to an end there will be discussions whether they’re positive or the club want to go in a different direction.”
Does Will Vaulks deserve a new deal?
Will Vaulks was the subject of interest from Rotherham United in January, however he ended up staying at Sheffield Wednesday.
The 30-year-old has proven to be really important under Danny Rohl and has now stared their last three matches in the Championship – making two key passes, winning 75% of his aerials and having three shots in their win over Bristol City.
Vaulks has made the most tackles in the Sheffield Wednesday squad this season (55), the second-most interceptions (32) and the second-most key passes (29) – showing just how important he has been this term.
Vaulks is the perfect example of what Sheffield Wednesday need at the club, made even better by the work he does with the academy players too.
The midfielder is eager to continue playing for the Owls and hopefully Rohl and the board decide he has earned himself a new deal.
