Danny Rohl has revealed the conversation he had with his Sheffield Wednesday team after the defeat to Huddersfield Town earlier this month.
Since Danny Rohl was appointed Sheffield Wednesday manager in October, he has been working hard to drag the team out of the relegation zone.
The Owls came close in December as he was nominated for Manager of the Month, but a number of disappointing results at the start of 2024 saw them plunged straight back into danger.
Things are looking a lot more positive now though as they head into the most important part of the campaign, having picked up nine points from a possible 12 in their last four matches.
The Yorkshire outfit are now so close to safety and Rohl is urging the whole team to put all their focus and energy into the final games of the campaign, despite a number of players not even knowing whether they will still be here in a few months time.
Eleven players will see their contracts at Hillsborough expire at the end of the season, while another seven could return to their parent clubs at the end of their loan spells.
While there has been talks of the likes of Barry Bannan and Josh Windass entering negotiations over new deals, Rohl has now revealed a conversation he had with all of his players regarding their contract situations.
Speaking to The Star, he said: “We spoke about it in our meeting after the Huddersfield game.
“Our commitment from our group was fantastic, we said that we have to look now for our goals and not too much to our own. This is what we are doing at the moment, we are not looking to our own, we are looking to our group, our team and this team spirit.
“There comes the moment we can make a final decision but at the moment everybody is agreed, clear and focused on achieving our goals.”
Are Sheffield Wednesday right to leave these decisions for the summer?
While Sheffield Wednesday fans will be desperate to see some of their key players put pen to paper on a new deal sooner rather than later, it is incredibly difficult to do when nobody knows which league they are going to be in.
For someone like Barry Bannan, he may well stay at the club regardless of whether they are still in the Championship or not. However, there are a number that could demand to leave if they are relegated, while some will need to be offloaded to earn some cash and others just simply wouldn’t be good enough if they do stay in the second tier.
It is understandable why these key decisions won’t be made yet and it is clear that the team will put all their efforts into their performances for the next ten weeks, even if they are likely to leave in the summer.
