Danny Rohl is ‘hugely confident’ that one Sheffield Wednesday player will be at the club next season no matter what.

Sheffield Wednesday’s future in the Championship is still up in the air, with their recent win over Millwall giving them a bit more hope.

The Owls are four points from safety, but still have the likes of Leeds United, Ipswich, West Brom and Sunderland to face in their final 13 games of the campaign.

While their focus is entirely on avoiding relegation, Sheffield Wednesday have the small matter of a long list of contracts expiring this summer.

Nine players will see their current contracts end in a matter of months, while another seven will return to their parent clubs following loan spells.

There has been whispers of the club opening talks with some players, though it remains unclear how many of them will still be at Hillsborough come the start of next season.

However, The Star have now reported that Danny Rohl is ‘hugely confident’ that Barry Bannan will put pen to paper no matter what division they are in.

Barry Bannan has been one of the Owls’ most important players in the nine years he has been with the club – netting 30 goals and providing 65 assists in 389 appearances.

The midfielder has already declared that he wanted to remain at Sheffield Wednesday, while Rohl has also praised his captain since he arrived in October.

It looks increasingly likely that both of them will get their wish, with Bannan expected to stay even if they are relegated back down to League One.

Who will sign a new contract at Sheffield Wednesday?

It will be a huge boost for Sheffield Wednesday, with Bannan one of the fans’ favourites and an ever-present positive over a rough few years.

Despite turning 35 years old this year, Bannan remains a pivotal part of the team and his experience and leadership is even more important to the younger players around him.

Hopefully a new deal for Bannan could encourage others to stay on, while Danny Rohl’s future could also determine that too.

Both Bannan and Josh Windass have admitted that the German is the best they have worked under, and if he commits to staying at Hillsborough beyond the summer then we could perhaps see a number of players eager to stay alongside him.

Sheffield Wednesday are likely to leave a lot of contract talks to very late though, with their position in the football pyramid probably being the key factor in some stars’ future.
