Simon Jordan Sheffield Wednesday takeover played down over Dejphon Chansiri factor

Sheffield Wednesday may have some takeover interest, and from quite a familiar face.

Sheffield Wednesday owner Dejphon Chansiri is among the most controversial in the Football League.

He’s lost just about all credibility and faith from the Owls fan base following a season of turmoil on and off the pitch.

Chansiri has raised eyebrows, not only among fans of his club but within the footballing community, with his running of Sheffield Wednesday.

He’s gone from pledging to put in no more money because of fan criticism all the way to asking the fans to clear a £2million HMRC bill.

The 1867 Group has formed in a bid to oust Chansiri from Hillsborough. But there seems to be no signs of an imminent Chansiri exit.

Now though, Simon Jordan has revealed his admiration of the club.

Speaking on talkSPORT, former Crystal Palace owner and now pundit Jordan revealed his admiration of Sheffield Wednesday.

He said:

“In my book, one of the questions I’m asking myself is, if I was to buy another football club, which one would I buy?

“One of the clubs I mentioned was Sheffield Wednesday because it’s got huge potential.

“It’s a huge area, it’s got huge catchment, it’s got a huge support base, it’s a proper football club in a proper area.

“If you wanted to build that football club and embrace the fans, you would be able to achieve it.

“If you wanted to have help with the training ground, you wouldn’t be having local planning permission from the council in London saying you can’t do this because someone somewhere with a telescope can’t see their view.”

Dom Howson comments on Simon Jordan interest in Sheffield Wednesday

Inevitably, Jordan’s comments have garnered a very strong reaction from Sheffield Wednesday fans, who at this point would want to see just about anyone replace Chansiri.

But journalist Dom Howson has urged supporters to not ‘read too much into’ a potential takeover from the talKSPORT pundit.

Howson posted on X:

Previous Sheffield Wednesday takeover interest

It was revealed earlier in the season that Chansiri had met with a consortium with regards to a potential sale of Sheffield Wednesday.

It was said that the potential buyers had provided everything needed from their end to move forward with discussions, but that Chansiri didn’t.

The 1867 Group revealed the above story and claimed that Chansiri was ‘not acting in good faith’.

Businessman Adam Shaw is someone who was revealed to be interested and in contact with Wednesday, though of course nothing came of his interest.

Why Simon Jordan may not be a realistic bet for Dejphon Chansiri

Anybody who states their interest in buying Sheffield Wednesday at such a time will get a reaction.

Jordan though, as a pundit and given the tone of his comments, appears to be speaking hypothetically; suggesting the reasons why he would be interested in Wednesday rather than stating his genuine interest.

And like Howson says, Chansiri would want a huge fee for Sheffield Wednesday.

Despite the club having no assets in the playing staff and poor facilities and infrastructure, with Danny Rohl the only real asset of note, Chansiri would want back just about every penny he’s invested into the club.

So that makes Sheffield Wednesday a very tough purchase, not only now but going forward, as there’s no real scope for the club to start building now after all this poor investment, with Chansiri surely having been hit in the pocket.

But Wednesday fans can dare to dream.

Their immediate dream, however, is Championship safety, with a home game against Stoke City coming up this weekend.
