After a torrid start to their Championship season, Xisco Munoz was sacked as Sheffield Wednesday manager after four months in charge.
Wednesday sit bottom after ten games in their first season back in the second tier after two seasons away. They only have two points after draws with Middlesbrough and Leeds United, and have lost all the other eight games.
This poor run of form has led to the Spaniard being relieved of his duties, with under-21s manager Neil Thompson taking charge for Saturday’s game at home to Huddersfield Town.
The Owls will now need a replacement for Munoz, and the rumour mill has already started.
Owls linked with former Leeds and Rotherham boss
According to TEAMTalk, Stevenage manager and former Leeds United boss Steve Evans is in the frame for the vacant managerial position.
Evans is said to be one of a number of names Wednesday are considering, with other managers such as former Sheffield United manager Neil Warnock and former Southampton and Stoke City manager Nathan Jones.
Evans took over at Stevenage in March 2022 with them sat in 22nd position in league Two, managing to steer them away from relegation to the National League.
He then did the unexpected last season, guiding Boro to promotion back to League One after nine years away.
Now in their first season back since 13/14, Evans currently has Stevenage sat in fifth place in League One, in a playoff position.
This brilliant start has clearly caught the eye of higher ups at Sheffield Wednesday, who are looking at bringing Evans in. It is said to be because of his experience steering teams away from a relegation fight.
Would Steve Evans be the right man for the job?
There is no doubting that Steve Evans is one of the most experienced managers in the EFL, with over 1000 games under his belt.
He also has experience managing in the Championship, taking Yorkshire rivals Rotherham United from League Two all the way up to the Championship, and managed to avoid relegation with the Millers in their first season up, before moving to Leeds in 2015.
However, Evans has not managed in the Championship since leaving Leeds just after eight months in charge.
Despite all of his experience, Evans would be a huge gamble. It is also highly unlikely due to the fact the club would have to pay compensation to release him from his contract at Stevenage.
The club would not have the funds for this after owner Dejphon Chansiri announced on Friday that he would not be putting any more money into the club.
