The message from Sheffield Wednesday ahead of the January transfer window is clear: loan signings is going to be the focus.

As was the case in the last January transfer window, Sheffield Wednesday once again look set to turn their January transfer focus towards the loan market.

It’s unsurprising given the circumstances. At the end of October, Sheffield Wednesday were placed under a registration embargo and although they’ve since been lifted out of it, it suggests a lack of resources at Hillsborough.

On more than one occasion now, Danny Rohl has said Sheffield Wednesday will focus on loan signings in the January transfer window, having had success in doing so with names like James Beadle and Shea Charles this season.

And in what might be a boost for the Owls on the loan front; journalist Dom Howson has now given his verdict on the matter, revealing a potential upper-hand that Wednesday might have in the race for loan signings.

Sheffield Wednesday still have three loan spots available ahead of January

Clubs in the Championship can sign and register five or more players on loan. However, only five loan players can be named in a single matchday squad.

Right now, Sheffield Wednesday only have two players on loan in Beadle and Charles and so Rohl can sign three more on loan, and throw them straight into a matchday squad alongside Beadle and Charles.

Posting on X, Howson explained how the Owls’ vacant loan spots is a hidden advantage for Rohl ahead of January.

Danny Rohl outlines plans to scour the Premier League in January

It seems inevitable that the Owls will focus mainly on signing younger players on loan from Premier League clubs in January, as might many other teams in the Championship.

Speaking recently, Rohl reaffirmed that idea. He told The Star: “I said this in the summer that we need such a player from the Premier League clubs to improve the squad.”

Rohl went on to add: “To get these close games on your side you need some high end quality in these phases of the game and this is what we need to work on. We will do this in the next weeks and then we will see what we can do.”

Given the success of Beadle in 2024 and the success of Charles since he arrived at Hillsborough in the summer, Sheffield Wednesday stand a good chance of attracting some exciting young players in January, and of enjoying a strong second half of the season.
