Sheffield Wednesday drew 2-2 with Werder Bremen in a pre-season friendly on Friday.
Sheffield Wednesday have just completed their last pre-season friendly on their Germany/Austria tour.
Danny Rohl watched his side draw 2-2 with German Bundesliga side Werder Bremen in a game that lasted four 30-minute quarters.
Sheffield Wednesday went two goals down but pulled it back in the second 60 minutes, with goals coming from Antony Musaba and Djeidi Gassama.
Sheffield Wednesday fans had plenty to say about Musaba and Gassama after the game on Friday, with the pair showing their class following their maiden seasons in English football last time round.
Rohl once again used the game to field two different sides with one set of 11 players playing the first 60 minutes and then another set of players playing the second set of 60 minutes.
There was some standout performances on the day. But one youngster managed to impress more that most.
Pierce Charles shines for Sheffield Wednesday in Werder Bremen draw
Pierce Charles started in goal for Sheffield Wednesday against Bremen.
The Northern Ireland U19s man was in goal for both of Bremen’s goals but wasn’t really at fault for either.
Charles is rated highly by the Sheffield Wednesday players and by fans too, with the 19-year-old having been handed his first-team debut by Rohl last season.
Against Bremen, The Star gave Charles an 8/10 rating, with journalist Joe Crann adding:
“Came straight into the XI after returning from international duty with Northern Ireland.
“Looked as good on the ball as you’d expect, and made a superb stop early in the second quarter to stop an own goal – was unlucky with the second, too, after a good save in the first instance.
“Really assured performance.”
What should Sheffield Wednesday do with Pierce Charles this summer
Rohl could loan Charles out this summer, and it seems like that it the likeliest outcome for the young goalkeeper.
He’s showing a lot of promise and his performance against Bremen suggests that he perhaps could benefit the Sheffield Wednesday first-team, though he needs first-team minutes.
Like Crann points out, he’d good with his feet, so he’d be an attractive proposition for a lot of teams who want to play out from the back.
Perhaps a League One loan move would be ideal for Charles. Though Sheffield Wednesday would need that assurance of game time to ensure that Charles’ development remains on an upwards trajectory.
He certainly showed his class against a strong Bremen side on Friday though.
