Sheffield Wednesday have put out a club statement that has sparked confusion amongst the fanbase.

The Owls have had a perfect lead up to the first game of the Championship season, as they welcome Wayne Rooney’s Plymouth Argyle to Hillsborough Stadium.

Sheffield Wednesday have made 10 signings this summer in a transfer window that could arguably be described as perfect, with them strengthening every single position, most notably up front, with Ike Ugbo’s move to S6 finally confirmed after a month of uncertainty.

With Danny Rohl also committing his future at the club, as well as key figures in the dressing room Barry Bannan, Liam Palmer, and Josh Windass, the latter of which has made claims of Sheffield Wednesday going on a promotion push, and that optimism is reflected in the fanbase as well.

However, on the eve of Sheffield Wednesday’s opening fixture of the 2024/25 Championship campaign, the club have released a club statement that some have shown their disappointment towards.

Sheffield Wednesday fans wearing fake shirts could be ‘asked to leave’ Hillsborough

Sheffield Wednesday have released a statement on the club website that says that any fans ‘wearing a fake shirt inside Hillsborough could be asked to leave’ as a result of the counterfeit shirts potentially being ‘unsafe’, as well the claim that ‘their sales impact directly on club revenues’.

The club currently sells official replicas of the 2024/25 Sheffield Wednesday kits at a price of £69 for an adults home shirt, and £53 for a junior home shirt.

The calls to potentially ask fans to leave Hillsborough has sparked debate amongst Sheffield Wednesday fans.

Sheffield Wednesday attempts to enforce rule deemed as ‘ridiculous’

One Sheffield Wednesday fan on X has commented on the recent club statement, suggesting that it is ‘a ridiculous thing to attempt to enforce’.

Sheffield Wednesday, as have many other clubs in this day and age, have set the prices of their club memorabilia out of the reach of the average fan, which in turn fuels the sales of non-official sellers of kits.

It is unfortunate for all parties involved that the club have set such a high price on the current Sheffield Wednesday kits, as at a reasonable price there would very likely be very few people taking advantage of fake shirts, with Owls fans undoubtedly wanting to support their club financially at the end of the day.

The support of the fans can’t be underestimated, as they turn up week-in week-out despite pricey tickets, something that they can’t exactly get an alternative for.

However, until Sheffield Wednesday’s kits are set at a reasonable price, there is very little that the club can say to turn fans towards paying inflated prices for the official kits.
