Sheffield Wednesday may have a keen eye on the French Ligue 2 between now and the end of the season.
Sheffield Wednesday showed some scope in the January transfer market, with the MLS looking like a new market for the Owls.
They were linked with a handful of names in the States; the Owls were linked with Daniel Gazdag at Philadelphia Union and tried to sign Duncan McGuire from Orlando City on deadline day.
Kevin Beadell is the head of recruitment at Hillsborough and should he stay with the club this summer, he could help to oversee an exciting summer window.
Sheffield Wednesday will have an eye on Troyes in Ligue 2
As well as the MLS and other overseas markets, Sheffield Wednesday could be keeping an eye on French outfit Troyes.
The French Ligue 2 strugglers loaned Ike Ugbo to the Owls in January, and the Canadian has since become a cult hero among Wednesday fans.
Ugbo has netted six goals in 10 Championship outings for Danny Rohl‘s side but his parent club are struggling.
Troyes currently sit in 14th place pf the Ligue 2 table and have just one point between themselves and the relegation zone, with 10 games left to play.
Relegation would see Troyes demoted to the third tier of French football; the ‘National’ which can often be made up of both professional and semi-professional teams.
Troyes relegation could be good news on the Ike Ugbo front
There’s no doubting that Sheffield Wednesday would be interested in a permanent deal for Ugbo in the summer.
He’s transformed the club’s fortunes this season, along with other players and Rohl of course; Ugbo has added that end product that wasn’t always there before, proving prolific in this Rohl system at Hillsborough.
And if Troyes are relegated, it could throw the club into some financial jeopardy and turmoil given the structure of the French football system and the financial peril that relegated teams face.
But one way they could ease their downfall is by selling Ugbo.
He’s certainly putting himself in the shop window ahead of the summer and whilst Troyes may fancy keeping hold of him, it would surely be impossible if they’re relegated, and having had a taste of Championship football this season, Ugbo may well be keen for more.
Sheffield Wednesday though won’t have a big budget in the summer.
If they stay up, fans would like to think that Rohl stays, despite Championship interest in him, and that Dejphon Chansiri backs his manager and tries to build on the current positivity surrounding the club.
And with strikers thin on the ground as it is, bringing in Ugbo on a permanent deal would be a huge bit of business for the Owls, though expect other teams to be sniffing around the in form forward in the summer.
