Danny Rohl has handed Ashley Fletcher a second chance at Sheffield Wednesday.
Speaking to The Star, the Owls boss said that the striker had earned himself a place back in the squad after impressing in training.
Despite scoring only two goals in the last two years, Ashley Fletcher joined Sheffield Wednesday on loan from Watford over the summer.
The striker has managed only two starts in the Championship and was left out of the match-day squad all together for four consecutive matches prior to the trip to Bristol City.
As Fletcher continues to search for his first goal for the club, Danny Rohl has admitted that he is working hard in training and could be given a new lifeline at Hillsborough.
“He [Fletcher] showed a great reaction,” Rohl said.
“He’s been hard-working in the training and this is what I am looking for. It’s hard for me always to say ‘this guy isn’t going to be in the squad’.
“But if you train hard and if you show something then I will take you (in the squad).”
Danny Rohl has showed he certainly isn’t afraid to bring players in from the cold, with both Marvin Johnson and Reece James given a second chance with the club.
Does Ashley Fletcher have anything else to give?
Ashley Fletcher only made a brief five minute cameo appearance against the Robins, but his impression in training looks to have fought his way back into Danny Rohl’s plans.
The rest of the attack are really struggling to put the ball in the back of the net, so it is understandable why the Sheffield Wednesday manager wants to try new things and give fringe players an opportunity to shine.
However, Fletcher looks far from the player to do that.
The 28-year-old has only ever scored more than five league goals in a season on two occasions – once with Middlesbrough in the 2019-20 campaign, and once in League One with Barnsley (2015-16).
He is far from the quality needed to keep Sheffield Wednesday in the Championship and is more a player to be brought in when you are resigned to relegation.
However, fans will see what magic Rohl can work on Fletcher – if any. We just need to trust in his plans.
