Sheffield Wednesday host Leeds United in the Championship on Friday night, in what should be an exciting clash.
Two very in form teams go head-to-head under the Hillsborough lights on Friday night, but Sheffield Wednesday and Leeds United are at opposite ends of the table.
The Owls sit in 23rd place despite winning their last five whilst Leeds United sit in 3rd, having won 10 of their last 11 in the Championship.
Danny Rohl‘s Wednesday could move as high as 16th with a win tonight whilst the Whites could leapfrog Ipswich Town in 2nd with a win of their own.
So there’s everything to play for tonight, and history dictates this tonight’s game should be a memorable one.
Adam Reach screamer earns Sheffield Wednesday point against Leeds United
Earlier in the season, Sheffield Wednesday pulled off a shock result at Elland Road, leaving with a point after a goalless draw.
It was perhaps the high point of Xisco Munoz‘s tenure, though it’s not the most memorable meeting between Wednesday and Leeds.
One of the most memorable came in 2018.
It was the last time that Sheffield Wednesday played Leeds United on a Friday night, and the game saw Adam Reach score what was hailed as a ‘spectacular’ goal by the club, with the game eventually ending 1-1.
Reach picked up the ball around 30 yards from goal before looping a volley over former Owls goalkeeper Bailey Peacock-Farrell in the Leeds goal, seeing his shot hit the post and then the back of the net.
More of the same magic needed tonight
With Leeds in some fine form, there’s a sense that Sheffield Wednesday need some similar kind of magic to pull off a win tonight, or a draw for that matter.
This Leeds side have shown that they can be frustrated by teams lower down in the league; as the Owls did under Munoz.
But this Leeds side is different to the one Munoz’s side faced.
Under the experienced Daniel Farke, Leeds have become ruthless in their quest for promotion, dominating teams and scoring plenty of goals.
They’re a side that boasts so much quality in the XI and on the bench, so it’s difficult for teams to compete with Leeds for a full 90 minutes.
But Sheffield Wednesday are a different team now as well.
They may not have the quality that Leeds have but they had a very tactical boss in Rohl and a set of players all pulling in the same direction.
And tonight, they’ll be backed by a vocal Sheffield Wednesday crowd who will lift the roof off Hillsborough if they earn a point and move out of the bottom three.
