Sheffield Wednesday skipper Barry Bannan has hailed summer signing Devis Vasquez, labelling the Colombian as ‘brilliant’.

The 25-year-old shot-stopper joined on loan from AC Milan this summer.

He quickly replaced Cameron Dawson in the Wednesday goal and kept his first clean sheet for the Owls in their goalless draw at Leeds United last time out.

And Bannan has now spoke out on the Colombian international, telling Yorkshire Live:

“He [Vasquez] has been brilliant. It’s weird because in the earlier games he wasn’t at fault for any of the goals and he didn’t have much to do apart from the goals.

“We saw what a good goalkeeper he was at Leeds, he was called into action a few times and made some good saves.

“It’s good for us, it’s good for his confidence as well. He’s done really well since he’s come in, he’s settled in well and I think he’ll be a good addition for the club going forward.”

Vasquez is one of 12 new players to ave arrived at Hillsborough this summer, though it looks like Vasquez could play a more important role than most with Xisco Munoz clearly favouring him over Dawson.

The Owls currently find themselves in 23rd place of the Championship table with just the one point to their name, with a tough home game against high-flyers Ipswich Town coming up this weekend.

One to watch this season…

Some of Wednesday’s summer signings may yet prove to be hit and miss this season.

Vasquez though looks like one who’ll eventually prevail and Munoz will be glad that Wednesday managed to get a deal over the line for him this summer.

He showed his class against Leeds and Owls fans will be hoping that Vasquez can do more of the same this season, with Wednesday looking like they’re really up against it in the Championship.

Whether or not there’s scope for Wednesday to make Vasquez’s stay permanent later down the line remains to be seen.

For now though, he’s got a chance to show everyone what he’s capable of, and keeping another clean sheet this weekend would be another impressive outing.
