Sheffield Wednesday have re-signed James Beadle on loan from Brighton, with the England youth star being the Owls’ only loan signing of the summer.
Sheffield Wednesday have already signed nine players this summer. And only James Beadle has arrived on on loan, returning from Brighton after his impressive spell on loan during the second half of the 2023/24 campaign.
Danny Rohl wanted his summer transfer business done early. He also wanted players arriving at the club on permanent deals which has so far happened.
But it still feels inevitable that Sheffield Wednesday will scour the loan market later in the summer transfer window when other clubs have done their own business, and younger players discover whether they’re in or out of favour.
The Premier League may be a key market for Rohl and head of recruitment Kevin Beadell later in the transfer window, with more signings like Beadle able to give the Owls that added depth and quality in the first-team squad.

Joe Crann comments on of Premier League loan signings at Sheffield Wednesday
Speaking with The Star, journalist Joe Crann has commented on Premier League loan signings, and the example that Beadle has set at Hillsborough.
Crann said: “Recency bias is a thing. When teams look at what Wednesday have done, and Beadle is the obvious one; he came to Wednesday, got better, and got better to the point where they [Brighton] wanted to send him back again.”
He added: “Look at the progress that someone like James Beadle has made, when Premier League teams are coming down to brass tacks, they’re making their decisions on which young players are maybe not ready to be part of their group, you’d like to think that Wednesday are on that list of potential destinations.”

Beadle returning this summer, and for the whole season, may tell us all we need to know about Sheffield Wednesday’s chances of more Premier League loan signings this summer.
Like Crann suggests, Beadle’s development in the second half of last season under Rohl, combined with the newfound ambition and competition for places in the side, has made Sheffield Wednesday a much more attractive destination for youngsters than in the past.
Premier League clubs make look fondly upon the Owls this summer and entrust Rohl and his backroom team to develop said youngsters.
And it could be a chance for Rohl to plug some gaps in the side should he fail in certain pursuits in the transfer market; e.g in deals for Ike Ugbo and Karamoko Dembele.
There’s still positions in the team that could do with an extra body, perhaps most evidently at centre-back despite the return of Di’Shon Bernard, so expect to see Sheffield Wednesday linked with some Premier League talents in the coming weeks.
