Sheffield Wednesday confirmed the appointment of Sascha Lense as performance manager on Monday.
After the sacking of Xisco Munoz following a winless start to their first season back in the Championship, the owls confirmed the appointment of Danny Rohl last week.
The German has moved to Hillsborough in what is his first role as first team manager, after previously being an assistant.
With that, Rohl will need all the help he can get. To do that, he has enlisted the help of Sascha Lense, who has joined the club as performance manager.
Ralf Rangnick on what new performance manager can bring to Wednesday
Lense has previously worked as a sports psychologist, where his most recent role was at Manchester United under their former manager Ralf Rangnick.
When Lense joined United back in December 2021, Rangnick said that Lense has a very hands-on approach.
“He is hands-on,” he told The Guardian at the time.
“He is not working too much on the theory. The players have to buy in. I can tell them whatever I want but I need to convince them. I need to get into their heart, into their brains, into their blood.
“Having worked together at Leipzig I know we will benefit a lot [from Lense]. For me it is vital that we should have the best possible person for this job. He’s from Germany, a former second division player. I worked with him for three years at Leipzig – one year we won promotion from second division to first with myself [as the coach] and the following years with Ralph Hasenhüttl as head coach.”
What can we take from Rangnick’s quotes on Lense?
Whilst Rangnick’s tenure at United did not end well or last very long, he is a very experienced coach.
So his words about Lense can vertically provide Owls fans with some optimism as to what he may bring to Sheffield Wednesday.
But it will be interesting to see how he fares in this new role, one which he has never worked before.
