Former Sheffield Wednesday midfielder Massimo Luongo has opened up about why he left Hillsborough back in 2022.
Luongo racked up over 60 appearances during his three-year stint at the club, before leaving the club as a free agent.
The 31-year-old admitted that Wednesday did offer him a new contract, but rejected it to move further down south.

Luongo on his departure from Hillsborough
Speaking to The Athletic, the 31-year-old midfielder revealed all about his departure from Wednesday.
“I left Sheffield Wednesday after they offered me a new deal but it had nothing to do with them.
“The idea was to come back down south because my family was still here and I was trying to find a better-suited club for everyone.
“I ended up being a free agent and it was a weird time because it was the first proper window after COVID.
“There were a few clubs I had said no to earlier in the window – and then I ended up going further away up to Middlesbrough.”

The move to the Riverside Stadium didn’t work out for Luongo, with the former Owls man leaving the club after four months – failing to make a single appearance, before re-joining former side Ipswich Town.
He enjoyed promotion with the Tractor Boys last season, with the Australian now a key player in their hunt for back-to-back promotions to the Premier League.
He’s started all 11 games for Ipswich so far this season in the Championship, even earning himself a call-up to the Australian national side during the current international break.
