Sheffield Wednesday defender Dominic Iorfa has given an ‘honest’ assessment of his future at the club.

Iorfa, 28, is one of several Sheffield Wednesday players out of contract in the summer.

The former Wolves man has been with the Owls since the 2018/19 season and has since racked up 156 total appearances, with five goals to his name.

This season, Iorfa was cementing his place in the XI under Danny Rohl, racking up 19 Championship appearances before suffering a muscle injury in the win vs Blackburn Rovers in December.

Iorfa returned at the end of last month and looked good in the 1-0 win vs Plymouth Argyle in particular, starting as one of three centre-backs and bombing up and down the pitch.

Dominic Iorfa would be happy to pen new Sheffield Wednesday deal

And now speaking ahead of the Championship clash against Ipswich Town this weekend, another former club of Iorfa’s, the defender has discussed his future in S6.

Asked if there’s been any talks regarding his future, Iorfa told The Star:

“I wouldn’t say we’ve had any sit-downs as such. There’s been a lot going on in the last months, the window has been open, I’ve been injured as well, so we haven’t had that sit-down discussion as such. His main focus for me is helping me to get back and my focus has been working hard behind the scenes to get back in and play as well as we can.”

Iorfa added:

“I’m settled here and I’m happy here but to be honest it’s not something that’s big in the back of my mind. I’ve come back from injury so my focus has been on getting back in, helping the team stay up. That’s my focus. If that’s the case (he’s offered a new contract) I’ll be happy, but right now I couldn’t really tell you.”

New deal for Iorfa makes total sense

Iorfa is arguably one of those players who, if it wasn’t for injury, would be playing at a higher level right now.

He has all the traits of a Premier League defender; he’s fast and strong, good in tackles and in the air, and can burst up the pitch with or without the ball.

But over the past few seasons he’s really struggled with muscle injuries and so there’ll often be a question mark over whether or not he should be kept on board.

For Rohl though, a player not only with Iorfa’s qualities, but with his desire to play for the club and to want to be a part of the long-term project should be enough to warrant a new deal.

What’s more is that Iorfa can play at right-back and as a centre-back too; he showed a lot of class starting on the right of a centre-back trio against Plymouth in a system that Rohl seems to be favouring right now.

If Iorfa can stay injury free between now and the end of the season and put in some good performances, he should surely earn himself a new deal at Hillsborough.
