Sheffield Wednesday players covered themselves in glory during the win over Blackburn Rovers today, with one man earning high praise.

Sheffield Wednesday welcomed Blackburn Rovers to Hillsborough this afternoon, going on to win 3-1 in what was a memorable match at Hillsborough.

Goals came from Bailey Cadamarteri, Marvin Johnson, and Josh Windass, earning the Owls just their second win of the season.

It comes after a draw vs Leicester City in midweek, with Danny Rohl‘s side now 10 points adrift after Huddersfield Town were held to a draw vs Swansea City.

There some standout performances today from the likes of Will Vaulks who dominated the midfield, Barry Bannan, Di’Shon Bernard, and Josh Windass to name a few, though Bambo Diaby has come under high praise for his performance.

Bambo Diaby puts in ‘mammoth’ performance vs Blackburn

Diaby earned a 9/10 rating from The Star today, with Joe Crann adding:

“Some mammoth defending from him on a couple of occasions in a snarling rearguard effort in the first half. The second half needed even more from him, and he delivered. Probably his best performance in a Wednesday shirt.”

And the stats show how dominant Diaby was at the back as well; as per Sofascore, he made 3 clearances, 3 blocks, and 1 interception, completing 20 out of 24 passes as well.

In what was his 15th performance in the Championship this season, it was arguably Diaby’s best performance of the season so far, and certainly his best under Rohl.

Confidence building for Sheffield Wednesday

If Sheffield Wednesday had played this Blackburn Rovers side a month ago, two months ago, it would’ve been a different story.

But in such a short space of time, Rohl has galvanised the side and survival now looks like a definite possibility.

There’s still a long way to go and many more wins are needed. But today’s performance, and the performance vs Leicester too, showed that Sheffield Wednesday can go up against the best in the league.

Rohl will be counting on more wins at Hillsborough which could quickly become a fortress for the Owls, and for the likes of Diaby to retain this current form.

When he’s at his best, he’s an unbeatable defender, and a mountain at the back for Sheffield Wednesday, which is exactly what they need this season.

Up next for the Owls is a trip to Stoke City next weekend.
