Sheffield Wednesday had a special guest at Hillsborough in midweek.
Sheffield Wednesday beat Plymouth Argyle 1-0 in midweek, securing a fourth-straight win for Danny Rohl‘s side.
And Rohl was watched by Hansi Flick; the former Bayern Munich and Germany boss attended the game, checking in on his former no.2 Rohl.
It was another memorable night at home for the Owls who are now level on points with Stoke City in 22nd and Huddersfield Town in 21st, with Watford in 12th just seven points ahead now.
Sheffield Wednesday remain in the relegation zone only on goal difference.
Hansi Flick wowed by Sheffield Wednesday fans
Flick picked a good game to come and watch.
Sheffield Wednesday fans were once again in full voice, both during the game and then afterwards when Rohl greeted them.
And speaking to the club ahead of the Championship clash vs Hillsborough on Friday night, Rohl revealed what Flick told him after the Plymouth game.
Rohl said:
“Hansi Flick was impressed by the supporters and the togetherness we showed in the game. This is really special, the link between the fans and the team. He said our team is well-organised and it was very nice to have him in the stands.”
Huge praise from a World Cup-winning boss
To earn such praise from someone like Flick; who’s won the Bundesliga multiple times as a player and manager, who won the 2014 World Cup as an assistant with Germany and then the Champions League as manager of Bayern Munich, is huge.
Sheffield Wednesday are a far cry from the likes of Bayern but Rohl and the players are certainly doing the best that they can, and succeeding.
Rohl has taken what seemed like a very average set of players and has made them into one of the fiercest and most dangerous attacking teams in the league; only Leeds United and Ipswich Town have more points than Sheffield Wednesday in the last five games.
And to do all of this in such a short space of time is incredible.
Flick will surely be proud of his former prodigy Rohl doing so well at Wednesday, with that ‘special’ connection between the fans and the team perhaps the thing that’s changed most under Rohl’s watch.
Even if Wednesday weren’t in position now to finish strongly, there’d still be a lot of appreciation for the effort within the group and the connection that we’re seeing now, especially at a time when fans remain so discontent with owner Dejphon Chansiri.
A win against Leeds United on Friday night would make for another hugely meorable Hillsborough evening.
