A journalist has claimed that Dejphon Chansiri deserves credit for one thing he did in 2023.
Dejphon Chansiri acquired a 100% stake of Sheffield Wednesday in January 2015 and kicked off his tenure nicely as they reached back-to-back playoffs, as well as signing the likes of Fernando Forestieri, Barry Bannan and Adam Reach.
However, things haven’t gone quite as smoothly in recent years, with the Owls gradually falling down to the Championship table until they were relegated in 2021.
The club have since endured a transfer embargo, have been through seven managers in the last six years and have completed some questionable transfers.
Chansiri has come under heavy criticism and pressure to leave the club, while many fans have protested against his ownership this season.
The Thai businessman was also heavily criticised after he had asked for 20,000 fans to donate £100 each to pay the £2 million bill he owned to HMRC back in October.
Most supporters want Chansiri gone and believe he has done more damage than good in recent years, though journalist Alex Miller has claimed he deserves praise for at least one thing.
Writing for The Star on Danny Rohl, Miller said: “His [Rohl] is a generational talent that coaches and players want to work for, with a schooling at the most sophisticated set-ups in European football.
“Frankly, Sheffield Wednesday are lucky to have him and his insight on board – Chansiri should be praised for his work in getting him on board albeit at the second point of possibility – and it is through Röhl’s vision that they should forge a future.”
Credit for Rohl or criticism for Munoz?
Danny Rohl is one of the best managers Sheffield Wednesday have had in a very long time and of course Dejphon Chansiri will take some credit for that, but he was also the man that brought in Xisco Munoz in the summer too.
The Spaniard had been sacked by Watford after ten months back in 2021, before having stints with Spanish club Huesca and Cypriot outfit Anorthosis – lasting only three months at the latter.
Chansiri has to be criticised for his poor judgement in thinking Munoz was the right answer in the first place, and while Rohl is close to making up for his mistakes, supporters can only imagine where they could be right now if he was brought in straight after Darren Moore left.
