Danny Rohl has explained why he included Djeidi Gassama in Sheffield Wednesday’s starting line-up at the weekend.
Speaking to The Star, the Owls boss admitted that the winger has really impressed him since he arrived at the club.
Djeidi Gassama joined Paris Saint-Germain’s academy in 2019, but only managed one senior appearance before he was sold to Sheffield Wednesday in the summer.
The youngster’s appearances at Hillsborough had so far been limited though, playing around 60 minutes of senior football prior to Rohl’s appointment.
Gassama had made two brief cameos against Plymouth and Rotherham United before Rohl decided to hand him his first start at the club.
The 20-year-old looked particularly dangerous on the attack for Sheffield Wednesday, but was unfortunately replaced at half-time following Barry Bannan’s red card.
Despite his removal at the break, Rohl admitted he was very happy with him and revealed what he believed his ‘weapon’ is.
He said: “I think with Gass it was his first start in the XI, and he has so much potential. He has to improve with his load so he can do it for 90 minutes, but that’s a normal process if you don’t play much in the past.
“But he has a weapon, he’s good one against one, and he’s also quick to make good movements between the lines and in the pockets. I’m happy with him.
“He had a big opportunity in the first half with the transition, and we spoke before about ball positions. We spoke to the young players about coming in and showing what they can do, and he’s doing so step by step. He was fantastic in training, and that’s the reason why we took him.
“It’s not just about defending, we want to attack and play forward. And this is the reason why I put him in.”

Sheffield Wednesday are the only team in the Championship that are yet to reach double figures for goals scored, while they have netted four less than QPR.
The Owls clearly need more of an attacking threat and what they have been doing so far hasn’t been working, so regular game-time for Djeidi Gassama is surely something we can all get behind.
The winger looked very lively at the weekend and could have made something happen if it wasn’t for Bannan’s dismissal.
Danny Rohl clearly sees something in the 20-year-old attacker and fans would love it if he could bring out the potential that was so visible against Bristol City.
