Danny Rohl’s appointment at Sheffield Wednesday has resulted in ‘one of the craziest subplots’ in the club’s history.
Danny Rohl was named as Sheffield Wednesday head coach in October, seeming like a very different appointment in comparison to previous managers.
The Owls had regularly opted for the more experienced, older managers such as Steve Bruce and Tony Pulis, or someone at the opposite end of the spectrum like Xisco Munoz.
However, Rohl arrived at Hillsborough with no experience in management, but instead a lot of knowledge and connections from his time in coaching.
The 34-year-old barely even played football and only spent three years on the pitch before hanging up his boots, before going onto join RB Leipzig’s coaching team.
Rohl spent almost eight years with the Bundesliga outfit, before moving to Southampton alongside Ralph Hassenhuttl. After nine months, he returned to Germany with Bayern Munich, before spending over two years with the German national team.
During his coaching career, Rohl had worked under Hassenhuttl, Niko Kovac, Hansi Flick and others. He also coached players such as Timo Werner, Ibrahima Konate, Robert Lewandowski and Jamal Musiala.
So really, it comes as no surprise to see some of these huge names wanting to support their old friend Rohl – but it is still baffling when they turn up at Hillsborough.
Timo Werner has already reportedly attended a Sheffield Wednesday game to cheer on Rohl and his father-in-law Sascha Lense, while reports today revealed that former Bayern and Germany manager Hansi Flick would be in attendance at their home clash with Plymouth Argyle.
While all focus is on the Owls staying up this season, journalist Joe Crann has admitted that Rohl’s contact list has welcomed the ‘craziest subplot’ to the Championship club.
He wrote on X: “One of the craziest subplots from Danny Röhl’s arrival at #SWFC is that we just have Timo Werner and Hansi Flick turning up to games in the Championship relegation zone.”
Can we take advantage of Danny Rohl’s relationships?
It is very exciting knowing that such big names are eager to attend games at Hillsborough, albeit a much lower quality than those matches they are used to.
Danny Rohl’s time with some of Germany’s biggest clubs and the national team is certainly very promising though, as you would like to think he would get in contact over any available loanees in the summer.
He is already eager to sign up Nico Schulz on a free transfer, but if the club manage to stay up this season then hopefully we could see him looking to his home country for even more talent.
