Pundit Chris Sutton has made a bizarre claim over Sheffield Wednesday manager Danny Rohl and his future at the club.

Rohl has kept Sheffield Wednesday in the Championship following a miraculous turnaround at Hillsborough.

The Owls completed their comeback after a 2-0 win at Sunderland on Saturday, with Owls stalwarts Liam Palmer and Josh Windass on the scoresheet.

After the game, Rohl was quizzed on his future, and he responded in the same manner as he has done previously.

He said:

“I think I said this before in some interviews. What is important that we have a direction. I think I have idea how this direction could be like. But just to have a idea it’s of course not enough… We know this club has a high potential when you see what it means for the people in the city.”

Now though, former player turned pundit Sutton has suggested that Rohl could be tempted elsewhere, outing one ‘bigger club’ in particular as a possible fit.

Chris Sutton comments on Danny Rohl at Sheffield Wednesday

Speaking on the Football Phone In on BBC Sounds, Sutton and Robbie Savage spoke about Rohl and Sheffield Wednesday following their win at Sunderland.

Sutton began: “If Danny Rohl has sort of real ambition, will he want to move on? Will he have his head turned? Would he want to stay at Sheffield Wednesday? I mean, it’s a big club. He has done an incredible job.”

Robbie Savage replied: “What are you saying? The manager should now leave?”

Sutton: “Well, the fact that he has done such a magnificent job there, there will, no doubt, there will be suitors out there who would be looking at Danny Rohl and thinking, ‘Blimey, I want a piece of Danny’, and he may think, ‘Do you know what? I may keep Sheffield Wednesday up again next season, but if XYZ wants me…’”

Savage: “Like who?”

Sutton: “Norwich. Norwich City. Bigger club.”

The likelihood of Danny Rohl leaving Sheffield Wednesday

With Dejphon Chansiri at the Sheffield Wednesday helm, fans won’t rule out a possible Rohl exit this summer.

It happened last summer with Darren Moore.

Rohl though is much more impressive than Moore and Chansiri surely knows that.

And after the events of this season; the fan protests against Chansiri and then the great escape, Chansiri surely knows that keeping Rohl happy will be huge for both the club and for his reputation among fans.

That reputation is at an all-time low right now, though he can slowly make amends by giving Rohl what he wants this summer, and allowing him to build the club in his own vision.

Rohl and Chansiri will meet this summer and discuss the future of Sheffield Wednesday.

Though if those talks stall or prove ineffective then Rohl may well have his head turned, with clubs undoubtedly ready to take a punt on the 34-ear-old German after his heroics with Wednesday this season.

Norwich City may be a good fit, but they have a play-off bout to compete in first.
