Chris Powell has shared the challenge he has set the Sheffield Wednesday players.
Speaking to The Star, the Owls coach admitted that he is hopeful this team can prove those who have ‘written them off’ wrong.
Chris Powell has spent time in management with the likes of Charlton Athletic and Huddersfield Town, while his most recent roles have been out of the limelight with Tottenham Hotspur and the England national team.
However, the 54-year-old opted to swap the English capital for Yorkshire last month as he joined Danny Rohl as his assistant coach at Sheffield Wednesday.
The pair have already made a positive impact at Hillsborough and have plenty of faith in this group of players, despite the club currently sitting bottom of the Championship table.
Powell is confident that the Owls can turn things around this season, as long as the players ‘go out fighting’.
Powell said: “I spoke to them after Plymouth and said, ‘Actually, we have a chance to show people that we can move forward from where we are now… Wouldn’t it be great in a few years’ time you could look back and say you’ve achieved something when everyone has written you off?’
“It’s going to be hard, and we’re going to get punches in the stomach this season. We might not get out of it, but you need to go out fighting, go out showing people that you care, and I see that in this group, I sense it.”

If Sheffield Wednesday are given the funds to bolster their squad in January then there is no reason why things can’t look a lot more positive come the latter stages of the campaign.
Steve Cooper was appointed Nottingham Forest manager in September 2021, when the club were also bottom of the second tier. The 43-year-old went onto guide Forest to the Premier League for the first time in 23 years.
Danny Rohl and Chris Powell still have plenty of time to rescue the Owls from relegation and if they can implement this new mindset, then we could definitely see Sheffield Wednesday make their mark on the Championship.
