Sheffield Wednesday coach Chris Powell has named Nigel Pearson as the surprise manager who helped convince him to head to Hillsborough.
Powell is part of Danny Rohl’s backroom team in South Yorkshire. He was added as a domestic coach who knows the game to help smooth the German into management.
The model professional is respected in professional football. One of his more recent positions came with the England setup and his stock is extremely high in the UK.
Powell explains Pearson role in getting Wednesday gig
Pearson is also a manager with bags of experience. As a player, he enjoyed lots of memorable moments with Wednesday and as a result, Powell sounded him out.
Ahead of moving to Wednesday, Powell has explained that he had a good chat with Pearson and he only had good words about the football club and the city.
Powell told The Star: “I spoke to Nige – he still lives in the area. He gave me a real good insight into the area and the people. He also said I can stop there every now and then!
“But I know about Sheffield, and how proud the city is. I’ve got good insights into the place…I’ve done my homework and I’m glad that I made this decision.”
Wednesday have done well to get quality coach
With Rohl having never managed a team before, it was imperative the club got the right people around him. In Powell, the club probably couldn’t have chosen anyone better.
The talented coach is respected by pretty much everyone in English football and he’s been there, seen it and got the t-shirt from his time as a player and as a manager.
It’s also nice to know that Pearson is still speaking fondly of the club. As a player, he made 224 appearances for Wednesday and helped the Owls win the League Cup in 1990/91.
