Carlton Palmer has given his verdict on the future of Danny Rohl at Sheffield Wednesday.
It’s been another hectic week where Sheffield Wednesday are regarded.
The feel-good factor is rife right now after a run of three wins in four, with the Owls beating Bristol City 2-1 in their last outing.
And Rohl sees his side head to Rotherham United this afternoon with a win against their South Yorkshire rivals able to pull them level on points with QPR and Stoke City in front of them.
But this week has also seen rumours of apparent Championship interest in Rohl surface, though no clubs have been named.
Carlton Palmer expects tough task to keep Danny Rohl at Sheffield Wednesday
There’s a widespread and growing sense that if Wednesday go down this season, they’ll likely lose Rohl.
The 34-year-old has shown his class in the Championship and he doesn’t deserve to be managing in the third tier of English football.
And speaking to Football League World, former Wednesday midfielder Palmer has now had his say on Rohl’s future at Hillsborough, saying:
“Danny Rohl, I’ve got to be honest with you, has done a fantastic job at Sheffield Wednesday.
“To turn around the confidence, turn around the results in the manner that he has, to give Sheffield Wednesday a chance of staying up, and, if you look at the teams at the bottom of the Championship now, Sheffield Wednesday are the team in form.”
Palmer also added that, if owner Dejphon Chansiri backs Rohl in the summer, providing Wednesday stay in the Championship, then the Owls could be challenging for promotion to the Premier League.
“I think Sheffield Wednesday are going to have it all on to keep Danny Rohl at the football club, should he achieve that status, because otherwise, if they keep him, they’re going to have to back him,” Palmer said.
“If they back him, they could well be back in the Premier League the following season.”
A pivotal summer on the horizon for Sheffield Wednesday
Whether the Owls beat promotion or not, and whether Rohl stays or not, the summer ahead is a crucial one for Sheffield Wednesday.
It looks like a long overdue clearing of the playing squad will take place, and whoever’s in charge will hopefully usher in a younger generation of Wednesday players.
And although this current set of players is currently providing the goods, and whilst several of them should be kept on, Chansiri will surely be keen to clear what has long been reported to be a hefty wage bill at the club.
And it’s a good excuse to bring in some younger players and if Rohl’s the man to oversee that, then it could be a very promising 2023/24 season for the Owls.
Next time round, if the Owls are a Championship club, then simply beating the drop comfortably would be a huge success.
But challenging for promotion like Palmer says seems like a way off yet.
Stranger things have certainly happened in football and especially in the Championship, and there’s nothing wrong with dreaming big.
And Palmer makes one good point; if Rohl stays then he needs to be backed and convinced about the long-term ambitions of the club, as he’ll no doubt have suitors elsewhere.
