Sheffield Wednesday went head-to-head with Watford in a Championship meeting on Saturday.

The Owls have endured a mixed start to 2024/25 and faced another tough challenge on Saturday.

Watford began the day seventh in the Championship table while Sheffield Wednesday were down in 13th but could have climbed into the top half with a victory.

The Hornets have been poor when playing away from Vicarage Road this season but took the lead after 29 minutes via right-back Ryan Porteous.

The Owls deserve credit for how they responded to going behind, however, with Michael Smith firing the hosts back on level terms just five minutes later.

What Sheffield Wednesday fans did vs Watford

Wednesday went in at the break probably feeling they were still very much in the tie and perhaps somewhat surprised they were not ahead.

However, the second 45 was a complete nightmare for Danny Rohl and his players.

Tom Ince put Watford in front from the penalty spot after 52 minutes before Vakoun Issouf Bayo also converted from 12 yards six minutes later

Issouf Bayo added his second of the game in the 67th minute to kill the game off and hand Watford a very rare away win.

It was a simply woeful display from Wednesday in the second half – so bad that fans at Hillsborough were spotted leaving the ground well before the full-time whistle, missing their side’s second goal and two more from Watford.

Speaking live at Hillsborough on Soccer Saturday, Kyle Walker said: “Some of the home fans are leaving. They’re not happy.”

What changes Danny Rohl should make at Sheffield Wednesday

Sheffield Wednesday were dire on Saturday, as shown by a lot of their fans opting to leave the stadium well before the game had ended.

The Owls now have a very tough run of fixtures on the horizon against Norwich City and Sheffield United next week.

And after such a shocker against Watford, it is clear Rohl needs to make changes to his starting line-up.

Pierce Charles impressed vs Brentford recently and could come into the net in place of James Beadle, who continues to ship goals at an alarming rate.

Max Lowe may also regain a starting berth to help sure up the backline, while Pol Valentin could offer something similar at right-back.
