Danny Rohl praises ‘outstanding’ Sheffield Wednesday response in ‘difficult place’ vs Derby County

Sheffield Wednesday pulled off a thrilling comeback win against Derby County on Sunday evening, and Danny Rohl has shared his delight at the manner of the victory.

It wasn’t easy at Pride Park, with Derby dominating the first half, but Sheffield Wednesday came out fighting in the second half to secure an important away win.

Whatever Danny Rohl said in his half-time teamtalk must have worked, as the Owls took control of the game, and got back on level terms thanks to a ‘phenomenal’ Barry Bannan goal.

Then, in the dying moments, Jamal Lowe proved to be the perfect substitution as he got on the end of a Callum Paterson cross to take all three points for Wednesday.

Danny Rohl demands credit for Sheffield Wednesday after comeback win

Speaking to the official Sheffield Wednesday Twitter/X account after the game, Rohl emphasised just how impressive the win was, while also underlining one aspect he was not happy with in the performance.

He said: “I think [Derby] started well, good intensity, hard to get the ball, they recovered the ball immediately. But my team, big credit to come back.

“Our start was not good. It was not what I wanted to see. But, to come back in a difficult place, it’s outstanding, it shows mentality and belief, and we took the points despite not being at our best.”

Rohl also wanted to point out that his team were dealing with some injuries and suspensions that affected his lineup, adding: “We have to work hard and keep going, we knew this, we won’t get gifts from opponents, but the comeback should get big credit, especially with all the changes — the different shapes and formations — but they did well, they deserve the credit. Another small step on our journey.”

Still room for improvement for Sheffield Wednesday

As Rohl pointed out, the start to the game was really poor for Sheffield Wednesday and they did not get a foothold until after the half-time break.

Against better teams, that kind of complacency and lack of composure will see you get punished a lot more severely.

Still, Rohl will have learned a lot about his team from the win against Derby. The positives need to be carried through into the next run of games, while the negatives — poor passing and an ineffectual front three — need to be remedied fast.

The Owls have four games coming up now before Christmas that could be huge for their season. Results will be expected against Preston North End, Oxford United, and Stoke City, while the challenge of Blackburn Rovers will be a real marker for what Wednesday can achieve this season.
