Sheffield Wednesday host Cardiff City in the Championship this weekend, with the Owls without up to four players.
Sheffield Wednesday welcome Cardiff City to Hillsborough on Saturday afternoon where they’ll look for a third-straight home win in the Championship for the first time since February 2021.
Danny Rohl have overseen a drastic upturn in form with his Wednesday side now in 23rd place of the table and just six points behind Darren Moore‘s Huddersfield Town in 21st.
Cardiff have enjoyed a strong season so far. They currently sit in 12th despite many tipping them to struggle, but they’ve now lost four of their last five in the league and so Wednesday will once again fancy their chances.
Danny Rohl gives Sheffield Wednesday team news update
In what is a typically busy festive period, Sheffield Wednesday’s players are picking up knocks and minor injuries, and Rohl has revealed that he could be without a few players this weekend.
The latest name in the treatment room is John Buckley; he came off the bench vs QPR last time out but was forced off soon after, and Rohl has since revealed that he’s undergone surgery and will be out for several weeks.
Bambo Diaby and Callum Paterson were two more names who picked up knocks in the QPR game, but Rohl says the hardened duo are back in training and able to feature against Cardiff.
Josh Windass and Michael Smith however are seemingly 50/50 to be involved this weekend. Rohl says he is looking at the pair day-by-day and so they seem unlikely to feature this weekend.
They look set to miss out along with Momo Diaby and Juan Delgado.
What happened last time Sheffield Wednesday played Cardiff?
Interestingly, and some Owls fans will certainly remember this; the last time Sheffield Wednesday hosted Cardiff City at Hillsborough, Wednesday won the game 5-0.
Paterson was among the scorers that day, playing in front of an empty Hillsborough during the 2020/21 season.
But this is of course the second time that these teams have met this season with Cardiff having hosted and beaten Sheffield Wednesday back in August, and with Barry Bannan scoring the only goal in a 2-1 defeat.
Though that Sheffield Wednesday side under Xisco Munoz is markedly different to the one we’re seeing now.
Although it’s the exact same set of players, it’s a whole new team under Rohl, who’s got Wednesday playing some exciting and effective football of late.
Cardiff will certainly be wary of the threat that the Owls pose and they’ll also acknowledge the fact that this is a different team they’re playing now, so expect a much closer game tomorrow than the one back in August.
