Sheffield Wednesday now boast an unwanted statistic following their defeat at Coventry City on Boxing Day.
Sheffield Wednesday have now lost their last two Championship fixtures after losing 2-0 away at Coventry City yesterday.
It wasn’t the Owls’ finest performance under Danny Rohl, who once again finds his side nine points adrift after Darren Moore‘s Huddersfield Town beat Blackburn Rovers.
After a positive recent run of form with wins over Blackburn, Stoke City, and QPR, Sheffield Wednesday’s uphill battle has once again been laid bare after yesterday’s defeat.
And there’s a common theme starting to emerge as well.
Sheffield Wednesday punished for lack of cutting edge
As per Sofascore, Wednesday had 11 shots yesterday (two more than Coventry), though only two of them hit the target.
So the Owls are creating opportunities, but not enough golden opportunities, and without that killer instinct they desperately need to beat the drop this season.
Journalist Alan Biggs blamed Wednesday’s defeat vs Cardiff City in the previous game on their lack of cutting edge, and after the defeat vs Coventry City, Sheffield Wednesday now boast the worst conversion rate in the whole division.
Sheffield Wednesday have recorded 338 shots this season, which is more than all of Rotherham United, Preston, Millwall, Bristol City, Huddersfield, and Swansea City, but only 5% of those have been converted into goals, leaving Wednesday with the worst conversion rate in the Championship (Transfermarkt).
And the Owls are also the lowest-scoring team in the league with 17 goals in their opening 24 Championship fixtures; the next lowest-scoring side are QPR with 20 goals.
Strikers now a priority for the January transfer window
It was evident beforehand that signing new strikers in January was the main aim, and that remains the case.
The Owls are facing a make or break January window and if Rohl can’t get in some new players then his side will surely be heading straight back down to League One.
The emergence of Bailey Cadamarteri is a blessing but he alone can’t guide the Owls to safety; he needs some experienced back up to give him some resting time and to also show him the ropes in the Championship.
Scott Hogan is one name linked but that link seems to have quietened down somewhat, though expect Rohl and Head of Recruitment Kevin Beadell to have plenty of names on their shortlist for next month.
