Sheffield Wednesday urged to shift star in January despite his ‘man of the match’ performance against Brentford

Sheffield Wednesday have been urged to temporarily part with one of their biggest talents as the January window approaches.

The January transfer window could prove to be crucial for Wednesday. As it stands the club sit 13th in the Championship, four points off the relegation zone but also four points off the playoffs.

A good transfer window could easily push Danny Rohl’s side up the table, while a neglected January could see another relegation scrap occurring.

Therefore, many of the Hillsborough faithful see the month as crucial to determining their season.

While incomings are vital to their success, any outgoings could be very telling too, with one journalist convinced that one of the club’s top talents should be allowed to leave.

There is no doubt that Pierce Charles is a sensational upcoming talent at the Owls. The goalkeeper only made his sixth competitive appearance on Tuesday against Brentford. However, Charles was credited for his performance against the Bees and was labelled the ‘man of the match’.

Rohl also recently praised the ‘keeper as he challenged Charles to hit the ‘next level’ of his development.

However, in order to achieve this, journalist Dom Howson believes that Wednesday needs to temporarily part ways with the youngster on loan in order to aid his growth.

He said: “The best thing that #SWFC can do with Pierce Charles is loan him out in January. Ben Hamer can provide back up for James Beadle.

“It’s no good for Wednesday or PC having him on the bench in the second half of the season. Send him out to an EFL club to build up his experience.”

Howson is right that sitting on the bench for the majority of the season will not help Charles’ development.

With Wednesday now out of the Carabao Cup, the ‘keeper is only likely to participate in the FA Cup fixtures unless James Beadle gets injured.

While there is a risk involved in a potential loan move, the long-term benefits far outweigh the short-term risks.

A successful loan spell to a League One side could see Charles return to the club in the summer as Wednesday’s first-team goalkeeper where he could continue his development.
