Sheffield Wednesday, despite having arguably the poorest side in the Championship, may well have the biggest.
Danny Rohl has almost 30 senior first-team players to pick from. But picking an XI that’s capable of winning a game in the Championship is currently very difficult.
The Owls have just one win from their opening 16 league fixtures this season, with the club rooted to the foot of the table and looking set for an immediate return to League One.
January then seems like a crucial month for Sheffield Wednesday an owner Dejphon Chansiri.
The Owls need players in, and players who’ll add quality to the side. But for that to happen, Wednesday may need to offload some names first.
Here we look at three Sheffield Wednesday players who could be on their way out in January and who may well have already played their last game for the club…
Ciaran Brennan
The Wednesday academy graduate looks nailed on to leave in January.
There’s already been talk of his potential exit in the winter transfer window with the Irishman once again in the doldrums at Sheffield Wednesday, so expect him to be moving on.
What level he might move to remains to be seen, though. He remains relatively inexperience but there could be a few lower league clubs ready to take a gamble on him.
Expect Brennan to be offloaded for free given the fact that he’s out of contract in the summer.
Tyreeq Bakinson
Bakinson is currently in the dark at Sheffield Wednesday.
He’s rarely featured this season having made just five appearances in the Championship and two in cup competitions, with Bakinson yet to feature in a single match day squad under Rohl.
The Owls are well-stocked in central midfield and Bakinson has fallen well down the pecking order, so he certainly looks like one who could move on in January and without making another appearance for the club.
Though the situations regarding loan pair Jeff Hendick and John Buckley, with the latter potentially returning to parent club Blackburn Rovers, could dictate what happens to Bakinson.
Mallik Wilks
The striker made an uninspiring return from injury last month, making a handful of substitute appearances but failing to impress in any.
Since, Rohl has left the 24-year-old out of the last three match days squads entirely and it looks like Wilks could well be one of the few who are put up for sale in the January transfer window.
He’s previously proved prolific at League One level and so there should be enough clubs ready to take a chance on him, and potentially ready to put some money on the table as well.
