Sheffield Wednesday have been told that Lee Gregory’s exit is now ‘inevitable’.
Lee Gregory completed a move to Hillsborough in August 2021 and played an important role in their two seasons in League One, netting 28 goals across 79 games.
After spending most of his time with the Owls as a regular up top, the striker has found himself struggling for minutes following promotion to the Championship.
Gregory did start nine of the first eleven games under Xisco Munoz, however he has found himself far down the pecking order under Danny Rohl.
The 35-year-old featured in the German’s first two games, but hasn’t made an appearance for Sheffield Wednesday since the 3-0 defeat to Plymouth Argyle in October.
In fact, Gregory hasn’t even been included in the last seven match-day squads, despite the likes of Michael Smith, Mallik Wilks and Josh Windass being absent.
While Rohl claimed that Gregory would still ‘have a chance’ last month, journalist Darren Witcoop has since reported that the forward is attracting interest from League One ahead of the January transfer window.
Despite Sheffield Wednesday’s struggles in front of goal this term, Carlton Palmer has also claimed that Gregory’s departure is now ‘inevitable’.
Speaking to Football League World, he said: “Gregory in his time at Sheffield Wednesday has scored 26 goals in 100 appearances, giving absolutely everything in every game for the club.
“He will inevitably leave the club, if not in January, then definitely at the end of the season as Wednesday look to bring in new players under Danny Rohl.
“Several League One clubs are interested in his services.
“Given his age, League One would be the right place for him, and he has the experience of being promoted out of League One with the Owls.”

Lee Gregory was a brilliant servant to Sheffield Wednesday in the third tier, but the forward will be approaching his 36th birthday in the new year.
The former Stoke City man is definitely not Championship quality anymore and could leave for free in the summer if the Owls don’t offload him next month.
Sheffield Wednesday certainly won’t make much from his exit, but every little helps, and they can also make up his reported £8k-per-week wages.
Danny Rohl has a number of players he will be looking to move on to free up the wage bill, with the likes of Gregory, Ashley Fletcher and Michael Ihiekwe said to be raking in over £38,000 a week between them.
