Duncan McGuire’s move to Sheffield Wednesday is now back on ahead of tonight’s deadline.
Sheffield Wednesday have been desperate to make a big money signing in order to bolster their frontline this window, with Dejphon Chansiri reportedly eager to splash the cash this month.
The Owls looked set to keep their promise as they launched a first bid for Orlando City striker Duncan McGuire at the weekend, before following up with a further three offers in the days after.
McGuire, who scored 15 goals in all competitions last season, was previously a target for Blackburn Rovers, Anderlecht and Bologna.
Sheffield Wednesday’s pursuit reignited Rovers interest though, and their Championship rivals eventually looked set to win the race after submitting a £2.3 million bid.
Despite Charles flying into England for a medical with Blackburn, journalist Fabrizio Romano reported late last night that The Owls were back in talks with Orlando City after his move to Ewood Park collapsed.
Discussions between the two parties are set to follow in the ‘next hours’.
Why did Duncan McGuire’s move to Blackburn collapse?
The 22-year-old’s near-switch to Blackburn was mysteriously over, with journalist Tom Bogert questioned over why it hadn’t happened on X.
He wrote: “All I know is Orlando were notified by Blackburn a few hours ago that the deal was off. Haven’t really heard anything differently since. Really odd.”
It’s baffling as to why Duncan McGuire isn’t joining Blackburn Rovers – especially given the location of the club, the size and also their recent positions battling for promotion.
There is obviously some reason why it isn’t happening, but Sheffield Wednesday certainly won’t care.
Danny Rohl‘s side are clearly open to spending the money to lure him to Hillsborough, and that would suggest that it is a target that the German manager really wants himself.
Goals is something that Sheffield Wednesday have struggled with this term, netting only 22 times in the Championship – the lowest tally in the league.
The likes of Ike Ugbo and Bailey Cadamarteri can’t really be relied on to keep them up, and that is where McGuire comes in.
Buying from the MLS can seem risky, but the Orlando City star has set the league on fire in only his first campaign and still has plenty of years to develop and adapt.
Rohl has already shown how brilliant he is with young players and this could be a real opportunity for Sheffield Wednesday to find their talisman.
