Sheffield Wednesday have been linked with this 23-year-old Premier League midfielder.
The January transfer window is now open, so far we’ve seen a number of Sheffield Wednesday transfer rumours emerge.
Danny Rohl‘s side are apparently keen on the likes of Isaac Hayden, whilst midfielder Tyreeq Bakinson has sealed a loan move to Charlton Athletic for the remainder of the season.
The Owls look like they mean business having brought in a new Head of Recruitment in Kevin Beadell last month, and the latest name apparently on their radar is West Ham’s Conor Coventry.
The 23-year-old midfielder has been on the peripheries of the Hammers’ first-team this season.
He’s spent time on loan in the Football League before with all of Lincoln City, Peterborough United, MK Dons, and last season Rotherham United where he racked up 16 Championship outings in the second half of last season.
The Star say that Coventry is a player that Sheffield Wednesday are keeping tabs on, but that the Owls aren’t the front-runners right now, with the former Ireland U21 man having interest from elsewhere in the Football League and from abroad too.
Last season, then Rotherham boss Matt Taylor spoke highly of Coventry, describing him as an ‘excellent’ player.
Conor Coventry could be a risky signing for Sheffield Wednesday
Coventry, at 23 years old, may have been hoping to gain a bit more first-team experience by this point in his career.
He has been in and around the Hammers’ first-team for a number of years and he did play a part in their Conference League win last year, but in terms of first-team minutes, Coventry is still lacking.
Interest in him isn’t surprising given his ongoing lack of game time in East London, and it’s no surprise to see Wednesday linked; links to Hayden suggests they want a more holding midfielder and Bakinson’s exit opens the door.
But whether or not this signing would improve the Owls’ current midfield remains to be seen.
We don’t know enough about Coventry, other than he’s a player with a degree of potential; this could be another one of those typical Wednesday signings of a player who arrives and simply boosts the numbers.
Though at 23 years old, he’d add some much-needed youth to an ageing side and he could well prevail under Rohl, so it’s an interesting link if nothing else.
