Sheffield Wednesday are reportedly still in the race to sign Duncan McGuire, despite Blackburn Rovers’ bid.
Sheffield Wednesday have been working their socks off to land a new striker in recent days, with the club already making three bids in an attempt to sign Duncan McGuire.
The Orlando City striker netted 15 goals and registered four assists during his first season in the MLS, before going onto attract attention from clubs across Europe.
The likes of Anderlecht and Bologna have been linked with McGuire, but it is currently Sheffield Wednesday and Blackburn who are battling it out for his signature.
Rovers had previously seen a loan bid turned down by Orlando before Christmas, while The Owls had so far been unsuccessful with their own offers.
However, McGuire has since refused a new deal with the MLS outfit and has made it clear he wishes to move to England.
Sheffield Wednesday only made their third bid for McGuire this morning, but it wasn’t long before NationalWorld journalist Chris Wheatley reported that Blackburn were ‘on the verge’ of signing the forward for £2.3 million.
He wrote: “Duncan McGuire is on the verge of completing a £2.3m move to Blackburn Rovers from Orlando City.
Sheffield Wednesday also in race but Blackburn’s offer includes a more favourable payment schedule. McGuire expected to travel to the UK tonight, if all goes to plan.”
However, Danny Rohl‘s side now appear to be clinging onto their hope of capturing McGuire – by making a fourth bid.
According to journalist Luca Bendoni, The Owls’ latest offer makes them the highest bidders.
He wrote on X: “Sheffield Wednesday currently stand as the highest bidders to buy Orlando City striker Duncan McGuire. #SWFC have just submitted an offer worth £2.275m, which is slightly higher than #Rovers’ one. Work in progress.”
What happens now?
It’s a bit of a confusing one, because as far as we are aware, Blackburn Rovers had agreed a deal for more than the £2.275m Bendoni mentions.
Though fans will be praying that Sheffield Wednesday have gone back in for McGuire, as their time to find a new attacker is rapidly running out.
If The Owls fail to land the 22-year-old then it will prove extremely tricky to find another target and lure them to Hillsborough in such a short amount of time.
