Sheffield Wednesday could be handed another option in the transfer market, with their former target on his way out.
The Owls have made nine signings so far and have already welcomed two midfielders in Svante Ingelsson and Nathaniel Chalobah.
However, having started the summer with only Barry Bannan in the middle, Sheffield Wednesday still need to strengthen this month.
With Chalobah struggling for game-time at West Brom next term, Wednesday could look to bring in an alternative defensive midfielder to add some competition.
They are yet to make a move for a new No.6 though, but could now look to a former target.

Former Sheffield Wednesday target set for exit
According to The Athletic, Isaac Hayden does ‘not have a future’ at Newcastle United – seven months after the Owls tried to sign him.
The Yorkshire outfit were one of a number of clubs interested in signing Hayden after his loan spell at Standard Liege ended prematurely.
The 29-year-old went onto join QPR until the end of the season and was a regular as they avoided relegation, but has since returned to Tyneside with two years left on his contract.
Having failed to make an appearance for Newcastle since December 2021, Hayden is now expected to finally leave permanently.
Darren Witcoop previously reported that QPR wanted to sign the midfielder permanently, while it is unclear if anyone else has pushed to sign him yet.
Should the Owls go back in for Isaac Hayden?
Given Wednesday’s previous interest, a free transfer for Hayden could be ideal in the final weeks of the window.
He would likely have to take a wage cut following his departure from St. James’ Park, but if he is willing to move to Hillsborough then it could be a real coup for Danny Rohl.
Chalobah has struggled to impress in the Championship recently and could potentially lose his place in the line-up if Hayden arrived, while he would provide some much-needed squad depth.
It will be tough to battle the likes of QPR for his signature if his contract is terminated by the Magpies, having spent most of his life down south.
However, Hayden could well be intrigued to work under Rohl, just like most of their signings have admitted.
