Sheffield Wednesday have a number of players out of contract in 2024, with some key players among those as well.
It’s a tricky period for Sheffield Wednesday right now, and it doesn’t seem like things are about to get any easier any time soon.
The Owls are in last place of the Championship table and only new boss Danny Rohl and his impressive backroom team can save them now.
Next year, whether Rohl and co stay beyond a possible relegation to League One remains to be seen, though should he stay on, he’ll have a first-team squad to rebuild.
As per Transfermarkt, the following Sheffield Wednesday players are out of contract next summer; Di’Shon Bernard, Will Vaulks, Tyreeq Bakinson, Josh Windass, Cameron Dawson, Dominic Iorfa, George Byers, Barry Bannan, Liam Palmer, Lee Gregory, and Ciaran Brennan.
Needless to say then, Sheffield Wednesday and owner Dejphon Chansiri have a lot of planning to do before next season, regardless of what division the club is in.
The pre-contract peril…
For clubs in England, players who are in the final six months of their contracts are allowed to agree personal terms with overseas clubs as of January 1st.
And there’s a couple of names in the aforementioned list who’ve already had suitors from abroad; Windass and Iorfa.
Windass came close to leaving for Argentina earlier in the year whilst Iorfa was a reported target of Dinamo Zagreb.
Stay or go for Sheffield Wednesday’s veterans?
Among those out of contract next summer are some really well-liked and long-serving players.
But after several years now, and with the club regressing perhaps quicker than ever before, it might well be time to call it quits, and for some to move on.
Windass hasn’t really performed this season and whilst he’s a good player at League One level, the Owls could well have a better, long-term replacement already on their books in Bailey Cadamarteri.
And the same could be argued of Iorfa, though he’s a very versatile and useful player in the Championship still.
It’ll surely come down to player preference, and given the chaos caused by Chansiri this season, and the financial uncertainty around the club, few would blame them if they moved on.
Rohl will surely want to keep everyone together for this season at least. But if offers come in in January, before any pre-contract deals are agreed, it’d make financial sense for the Owls to sell.
