Sheffield Wednesday have been linked with a potential swoop for this League One star.
Sheffield Wednesday are gearing up for a busy end to a rather subdued January transfer window.
The Owls have a few names on their radar with a move for Orlando City striker Duncan McGuire looking quite advanced, albeit with a few final hurdles to get over.
Another name said to be on Danny Rohl‘s transfer wish list is Wigan Athletic and Northern Ireland winger Jordan Jones.
Reports last week credited Sheffield Wednesday, Rotherham United, and now managerless Huddersfield Town with a potential swoop for the 29-year-old, who’s out of contract at the end of this season.
Graeme Bailey says Jordan Jones swoop ‘makes a lot of sense’
Jones is enjoying a standout season with Wigan in League One; he’s featured 18 times in League One, scoring twice and assisting four having played as a left wing-back for much of the campaign so far.
And speaking exclusively to Sheffield Wednesday News, journalist and transfer insider Graeme Bailey has given his verdict on Jones to Hillsborough, saying:
“Jordan Jones; he’s available, he’s got six months left [on his contract], but he’s having a very good season actually. Wigan are not asking a huge amount, but they would like him to stay. I can see why Sheffield Wednesday would want him… It makes a lot of sense to me, and he probably fits in the price category as well.”
Jones is formerly of the likes of Middlesbrough, Kilmarnock, Rangers, and Sunderland among others.
He’s been with Wigan Athletic since 2021 but is now enjoying his best campaign with the club, after a tough few years which has seen him spent time out on loan.
A potentially shrewd purchase for Sheffield Wednesday
On the surface, Jones doesn’t seem like a very exciting signing for Sheffield Wednesday.
His age may not be so appealing, at 29 years old, but it’s easy to forget that Marvin Johnson is 33 and he’s now playing some of the best football of his career.
And Wigan isn’t a very glamours club either. But Wednesday got Josh Windass from Wigan and he’s gone on to become one of the club’s most prolific and creative players of modern times, so Jones may actually be a potentially shrewd purchase for the Owls.
What’s more, like Bailey says, is that Jones is probably one of the few players who actually fits Sheffield Wednesday’s transfer budget, so for Rohl, this potential signing seems to make a lot of sense, especially given all the noise surrounding Johnson this month.
A move for Jones could well be dependent on Johnson as it stands. But this certainly seems like a story to keep an eye on in the final days of the January transfer window.
