One player who Sheffeld Wednesday tried to sign in January has just shown them exactly what they missed out on.
Sheffield Wednesday were eager to sign a new midfielder in the summer as they allowed Tyreeq Bakinson and George Byers to leave on loan, while John Buckley returned to Blackburn Rovers.
The Owls failed to sign one though and may have instead been made to regret missing out on one of their key targets in the January transfer window.
Various reports claimed that Danny Rohl’s side were in talks to sign Conor Coventry from West Ham last month, with the 23-year-old in the final six months of his contract in London.
However, Sheffield Wednesday’s move for Coventry eventually collapsed and he instead opted to make a significant jump down to League One with Charlton Athletic.
The midfielder was eager to remain in the English capital and could also be promised frequent playing time at The Valley.
While the Owls are enjoying their own brilliant form at the minute, Rohl may have kept one eye on the progress of Coventry, who really showed him what he is missing out on with his display against Derby County last night.
Coventry has made six starts for the Addicks since joining last month, playing the full 90 minutes in their win over the Rams.
The West Ham academy product was subject to heavy praise form manager Nathan Jones after his performance, with the coach saying: “I thought Conor Coventry was excellent tonight, in how he went about his work. Especially given he’s been out of the team.
“I’ve demanded stuff from him and he’s come back today and reacted wonderfully well.”
Coventry had the second-most touches on the pitch at Pride Park (80), as well as completing the most accurate passes (35).
He also completed 100% of his dribbles (2), 100% of his ground duels (6) and 100% of his aerial duels (3), as well as making four clearances, six interceptions and four tackles.
Will Sheffield Wednesday regret not signing Coventry?
While Sheffield Wednesday do look to be on the up at the minute, it would only take one injury to their midfield for them to massively regret not bolstering that position in the January window.
Will Vaulks and Barry Bannan have been vital to their recent upturn in form, but Momo Diaby is their only real back-up option, and he didn’t even make the bench against Bristol City due to injury.
Their failure to land their transfer targets last month could end up coming back to bite them, though perhaps it says a lot about the club if a Premier League player preferred a move to League One.
With a stack of players potentially leaving on a free transfer in the summer, the Yorkshire outfit will have no choice but to add to their midfield, but hopefully it is of players with the quality of Conor Coventry rather than ageing free agents.
