Sheffield Wednesday boss Danny Rohl says the club are open to letting this 30-year-old Sheffield Wednesday defender leave this month.
Sheffield Wednesday look set for a busy final week of the January transfer window, with both comings and goings looking likely.
Only two have arrived this month, with two having left; James Beadle and Ike Ugbo are the arrivals whilst John Buckley and Tyreeq Bakinson have moved on.
As it stands, it seems like outgoings are more likely than incomings right now.
The likes of Michael Smith have been linked quite heavily with Derby County this month, whilst Lee Gregory and Josh Windass have both had exit rumours too.
Another player now linked with a move away from Hillsborough is Reece James.
Danny Rohl says Sheffield Wednesday ‘open’ to Reece James exit
James, 30, rejoined Sheffield Wednesday on a permanent deal in the summer, after spending last season on loan at the club from Blackpool.
But the left-back has featured just seven times in the Championship this season; he’s featured just five times under Rohl and has made just the one substitute appearance since November.
The Star are now reporting that an unnamed ‘promotion-challenging’ club in League One are interested in acquiring his services this month, with Rohl confirming recent interest in the Englishman.
The Owls boss said:
“For sure. We have had some questions about him [James] from other clubs and this is normal. It’s about us finding an agreement, everybody needs to be convinced about the next step and yes, we are open (to James leaving the club this month). If not then of course he is still a part of my team. I have had conversations with him and this is important, that he knows what I am thinking about him in the moment.”
Why James exit might not be the best idea
Sheffield Wednesday appear to be desperate to offload some players in the final days of the January transfer window.
And given their league position and lack of incoming players, that suggests that the club are in a pretty perilous financial position.
James remains an experienced and well-liked player among Sheffield Wednesday fans, and his lack of game time under Rohl may be surprising to some.
Marvin Johnson has the left-back berth on lockdown but after him, James is the only natural left-back at the club; Akin Famewo has been playing there this season but he’s a centre-back by trade.
So James leaving doesn’t seem like it makes too much sense, especially with Johnson having been linked with a move to Ipswich Town recently as well.
Sheffield Wednesday are back in action against Coventry City in the FA Cup fourth round tonight.
