Sheffield Wednesday are set to enter the final week of the transfer window without having sold any players.
The Owls have welcomed ten new signings to the club this summer, and as a result, were expected to have to free up some space on their wage books.
Sheffield Wednesday released eight players at the end of the season and have also loaned out Mallik Wilks, but they are still waiting to offload anyone permanently.
Reports have claimed that the Yorkshire outfit could loan out Bailey Cadamarteri, while Callum Paterson looks set to leave the club after four years.
Micheal Smith has also been linked to Wrexham, but it has been suggested that he could now stay.
Sheffield Wednesday likely to keep veteran defender
Another player who could also stay at Hillsborough is Marvin Johnson, who had gained interest from Oxford United.
The ‘fantastic’ 33-year-old had been made a target for the newly-promoted side after losing his place in the starting line-up to new boy Max Lowe.
However, The Star have now reported that any chance of a move to the Kassam Stadium is ‘looking increasingly unlikely’.
Johnson looks set to pick up less minutes than last season following Lowe’s arrival, but remains his only real back-up option.
The veteran really impressed during Wednesday’s Carabao Cup win last week, making four key passes, winning 100% of his headers and making four clearances.
His display was then followed up by Lowe’s ‘appalling’ performance in the 4-0 defeat to Sunderland.
Marvin Johnson can still challenge Max Lowe for a starting spot
It could well have given Danny Rohl something to consider and would now prefer to keep Johnson in case he wants to rotate him and Lowe around throughout the campaign.
The German coach would have to bring in a replacement if Johnson was to leave anyway, but his versatility and leadership already makes him one of the best candidates for a place in the squad.
Johnson is believed to be raking in around £10k-per-week in Yorkshire though, so if Wednesday were to receive a bid for him late in the window then who knows what would happen.
The Owls need a much stronger squad than last season to compete near the top, but keeping those experienced heads such as Johnson could also be a huge help.
