Sheffield Wednesday look to be in store for a busy, and probably hectic January transfer window.
Sheffield Wednesday have almost become synonymous with chaotic transfer windows.
Over the last few years, Sheffield Wednesday have gone about a squad rebuild almost every summer, though the Owls still don much of the same first-team that they had even under the likes of Carlos Carvalhal.
Many players tend to come and go and that looks set to be the case in January.
The club have hired a new Head of Recruitment in Kevin Beadell and Danny Rohl has often spoken about having a clear idea of the changes he wants to see at Hillsborough in the New Year.
Danny Rohl reveals Sheffield Wednesday ‘talks’
Speaking ahead of tonight’s Championship clash vs Norwich City, Rohl has provided a further update on the January transfer window, revealing that he’s held talks with players and hinting at potential exits.
Rohl told The Star:
“We have games to go and in these games anything can happen. But for sure we have had to start to have some not easy talks about the future. I have a clear mindset and will always be very honest with them. If I see a potential in them then I let them know, if I have a feeling that it might be difficult for them in the second half of the season then it is my job to tell them.
“Then it’s about looking at the situation, what can happen, if there is a player who wants to play more, then we sit together and find a solution. It could be that it’s a player who is a good player but is not so good for my style of football, then it’s also about talking with them and giving this advice that it might be hard. I have started these talks and will do this for the next weeks.
“We have games to go until January and it is important that everybody is ready to play. I cannot say players are out, maybe in the next weeks somebody is in because we need them. This is the balance. I have to think the players understand. Everybody has given us good feedback because they like the way we play football and this is important. We will see in January what we can do and see what is best for the club and for the players as well.”
Who could leave Hillsborough next month?
With Sheffield Wednesday having one of the biggest first-team squads in the Championship and one of poorest financial situations, it seems anyway, player exits always looked a likelihood next month.
Expect a number of fringe players to move on either permanently or temporarily with changes in the midfield and attacking departments looking the most likely.
Loan midfielders John Buckley and Jeff Hendrick appear to face a contested January with both out of favour and both, Buckley more so, potentially returning to their parent clubs in the New Year.
In attack, Bailey Cadamarteri’s emergence has forced Lee Gregory well out of contention, along with Mallik Wilks, whilst Ashley Fletcher is in the same boat as Buckley and Hendrick.
Add to that the fact that Sheffield Wednesday want to sign another striker next month and it really pushes the likes of Gregory and Wilks out of the picture.
With Rohl having already held talks with certain individuals, it tells us that Sheffield Wednesday will waste no time in bettering their squad in January.
It may be a case of moving players out before anyone significant can come in, but with Beadell in place and he and Rohl working closely together on new signings, it’s looking like next month’s window could be a positive one for the Owls.
