Sheffield Wednesday may have been handed a huge potential boost in pursuit of one of their January transfer targets.
Sheffield Wednesday’s January transfer window has been a bit slow so far.
It started positively and hastily with the loan signings of James Beadle and Ike Ugbo, though Danny Rohl appears to have missed out on a few targets since then.
Conor Coventry is the obvious one, though Wednesday are said to have fancied Leeds United’s Darko Gyabi before his move to Plymouth Argyle too.
As well as a new central midfielder, a striker remains an obvious priority for the Owls, and one who’s been linked this week is Arsenal’s Mika Biereth.
He started the season on loan at Motherwell where he netted six and assisted five in 14 league outings, but he’s now been recalled by the Gunners.

Reacting to the news, Motherwell boss Stuart Kettlewell had this to say:
“It’s a major, major disappointment. This was a little bit unexpected. The conversation was that Mika would stay here until the end of the season just last week unless something big came on the table for Arsenal that they couldn’t turn down.
“They [Arsenal] believe there’s an opportunity to send him to another club that takes him that step beyond where we are just now.”
Biereth on the move, and hopefully to Hillsborough
Given the timing of this; Biereth’s links to Hillsborough emerging just yesterday and now the recall, combined with Kettlewell’s comments; it all seems to point in a very positive direction where Sheffield Wednesday are concerned.
Game time could be readily available at Wednesday despite Bailey Cadamarteri’s emergence; he’s obviously done well but at 18 years old, he can’t be expected to the lead the line, and he’s shown signs of fatigue in the past few weeks as well.
Biereth though has been in fine form in Scotland and he would be a quality and timely addition to Wednesday’s attacking ranks, which looks like it could lose a few names in the next two weeks.
Rohl and Sheffield Wednesday won’t be counting on Biereth signing. But given the timing and given the fact that Wednesday’s Head of Recruitment Kevin Beadell has ties to the North London club, it certainly seems like Biereth could be a potential arrival for the Owls.
