Sheffield Wednesday are closing in on their first signing of deadline day.
Sheffield Wednesday have so far endured a difficult end to the transfer window, having spent most of the day chasing a deal for Duncan McGuire.
After seeing four bids rejected this week, the Owls look to have ended their pursuit of the Orlando City striker as he nears a £2.3 million switch to Blackburn Rovers.
While their tracking of a striker seems to have hit a brick wall, Sheffield Wednesday now appear to have turned their attention to a wide attacker.
Reports earlier this afternoon claimed the Owls were ready to compete with Birmingham City for the signing of Leeds United’s Ian Poveda.
It hasn’t taken long for the deal to progress, with Alex Miller claiming the Colombian is ‘in Sheffield’ to complete his permanent move to Hillsborough.
Miller did follow it up with a post on X that read: “To be squeaky crystal clear; he may still be on his way *just*. He’s certainly on the M1 / outskirts. Definitely past Tankersley, I’d say.”
Is this a good signing?
Sheffield Wednesday could certainly do with some attacking options, especially given they didn’t even have a single winger on the bench for yesterday’s stalemate against Watford.
Ian Poveda’s goalscoring record isn’t great though, netting only four goals in 67 senior appearances for Leeds, Blackpool, Blackburn and Manchester City.
The ‘superb’ 23-year-old did really impress for City’s youth ranks though, netting 15 goals and providing 13 assists for the U21s and U18s.
Danny Rohl is probably the right man to get the best out of him, but it doesn’t ignore from the fact that the club appear to have failed to bring in a proven goalscorer.
