Sheffield Wednesday have a new priority position on their agenda; a new left-back.
Throughout January, it was a striker that Sheffield Wednesday so desperately needed.
The recent goals of Ike Ugbo has helped ease the fact that the Owls didn’t sign another no.9 on deadline day, along with the arrival of attacking midfielder Ian Poveda.
Now though, after injuries to Akin Famewo and January signing Kristian Pedersen, Danny Rohl has now admitted that he could scour the free agent market for a new left-back in the coming weeks.
With that in mind, here are three free agent left-backs who Sheffield Wednesday could sign for free right now…
Danny Rose
Former Tottenham and Sunderland left-back Danny Rose remains a free agent after being released by Watford at the end of last season.
Now 33 years old, the Doncaster-born full-back has 300 career appearances to his name with 202 of those coming in the Premier League.
He’s was known for being a very quick and energetic full-back who loved to get forward, potentially making him the ideal back-up player for Marvin Johnson who now has a lot of pressure riding on his shoulders, being the only fit and available option on the left apart from Reece James.
Former Sheffield Wednesday ace Matt Penney
Former Sheffield Wednesday man Matt Penney is also a free agent, having been released by Ipswich Town upon their promotion to the Championship last season.
Penney spent 10 years working his way through the youth ranks at Sheffield Wednesday before making his first-team debut in 2016, eventually leaving as a free agent in 2021 with 32 first-team appearances under his belt.
Injury hindered him at Ipswich, but throughout his career he’s shown definite signs of a very good full-back, and at 26 years old he could still gave a fruitful career in the Football League, and potentially back at the club that gave him his football upbringing.
Gaetan Bong
Former Wigan Athletic, Brighton, Nottingham Forest and Cameroon full-back Gaetan Bong is another free agent potentially available to Rohl and Sheffield Wednesday.
Although 35, he boasts a wealth of experience having played for the likes of Olympiacos and FC Metz, as well as having 51 Premier League appearances to his name and 16 caps for Cameroon.
He would definitely be seen as a back-up player. But that’s what Rohl needs right now, so Bong could be a decent, albeit temporary addition to the left-back ranks at Hillsborough.
