Sheffield Wednesday have 10 first-team players currently out of contract next season.
Danny Rohl has recently revealed that he has a list of players who he’d like to keep at Hillsborough when their contracts expire at the end of this season.
But with so many seeing their current deals expire in 2024, there will inevitably be some players leaving as free agents next summer.
Here we look at all 10 Sheffield Wednesday players out of contract next season and whether they should be kept or let go…
Barry Bannan – keep
Bannan is an obvious candidate to be handed a new deal.
He’s discovered a new lease of life under Rohl after a tough start under Xisco Munoz, with Bannan’s passing game and overall leadership qualities really prevailing in this new-look Wednesday side.
Lee Gregory – release
On the whole, Gregory has been a great servant for Sheffield Wednesday.
He scored 28 goals across both seasons in League One and will be remember fondly for his efforts during what was a dark period in the club’s modern history.
But he’s only started once under Rohl, playing just twice, and having been left out of the last seven match day squads now, so expect the 35-year-old to move on in January or next summer.
Di’Shon Bernard – keep
Like Bannan, Bernard is another obvious candidate to be handed a new deal.
He’s arguably been Sheffield Wednesday’s best signing and plenty of Owls fans have called for the former Manchester United man to be handed a new deal.
And at 23 years old, he’s a player who Rohl could certainly look to build a new-look Sheffield Wednesday side around going forward.
Cameron Dawson – keep
Dawson is a pretty divisive name among Sheffield Wednesday fans.
He has his moments, like in the draw vs Leicester City last month, but he also has moments where he should probably do better, like in the defeat at Norwich City earlier this month.
But with him and Devis Vasquez being the only first-team goalkeepers at the club and with Vasquez set to return to parent club AC Milan next summer, Dawson may be kept around purely as depth in that department.
Dominic Iorfa – release
Iorfa recently suffered a devastating injury blow, with the defender facing several weeks on the sidelines with a fresh muscle injury.
It’s a shame for the player who was really cementing his place in the XI under Rohl, but his injury history could give the club a difficult decision to make here.
Although he’s a good servant and a good player, letting Iorfa go could be part of a necessary clear out so that Rohl can get his own stamp on the side.
Josh Windass – keep
Windass is a bit like Dawson; he can be quite a contested figure among Owls fans with the striker often hit and miss with his performances.
He’s currently sidelined but in his last outings for Sheffield Wednesday, he’s looked as good as he has done all season, and Rohl will surely favour his energy and work-rate in attack.
Another year for Windass looks like a good move.
Tyreeq Bakinson – release
The 25-year-old is yet to feature under Rohl, despite having no injury to report of.
He’s come onto the bench in the last two outings but hasn’t come off it yet, so it seems like Bakinson will either be moved on next month, or next summer.
George Byers – keep
Byers, although he’s not had his best season so far, looks like an easy keep for Sheffield Wednesday.
He’s started nine of Rohl’s 11 games in charge but has only finished one of them, losing his place in the XI vs QPR last time out.
Byers keeps things ticking over, albeit without doing anything too spectacular, and it looks like he could be a useful squad player for Rohl next season.
Liam Palmer – release
Palmer is a certified Wednesday legend.
He’s made more than 400 total appearances for the club and has been a key player during some successful, and also some not so successful, seasons at the club.
But at 32 years old and with his recent form having been less than impressive, it looks like it’d be best for both if Palmer and Wednesday cut ties in the summer.
Will Vaulks – keep
Vaulks has become a huge fan favourite in recent weeks.
His impressive recent form has made him a key player for Rohl; the Welshman has provided amazing coverage in front of the defence, with his tackles, interceptions and so on proving influential in this upturn in form.
An easy keep for the club.
