Sheffield Wednesday could spend big on a striker in January, but who they might turn to remains to be seen.
Despite a draw vs Leicester City and a win over Blackburn Rovers last week, Sheffield Wednesday remain in last place of the Championship table and 10 points adrift.
Relegation remains the likeliest outcome for the Owls this season but under Danny Rohl, there’s an improved chance of survival.
To achieve that, though, owner Dejphon Chansiri will need to provide in next month’s transfer window, and recent reports have claimed that he’s ready to do just that.
Alan Nixon says that Chansiri is ready to spend up to £30,000-a-week on a loan striker in January.
Michael Obafemi could be the perfect answer to Sheffield Wednesday’s transfer wish
Whether or not the club should spend £30,000-a-week on one player alone remains up for debate.
But that £30,000-a-week bracket gives the Owls plenty of room for maneuver, and plenty of options ahead of January; providing that the report is true, of course.
Expect the Premier League to be the first port of call for Sheffield Wednesday, particularly lower-end Premier League.
And one immediate name who springs to mind could be Burnley striker Michael Obafemi.
The Republic of Ireland international was snapped up by Burnley last season after impressing at Championship level with Swansea City.
Joining Swansea from Southampton in 2021, the 22-year-old went on to score 12 Championship goals in his maiden season for the Swans, then scoring two in 12 for Burnley in the second half of last season, largely playing as a back up striker.
Since promotion to the top flight, Obafemi has played just twice in the Premier League, with both appearances coming as a late substitute in recent games after injury kept him out for the first part of the season.
Could Burnley be willing to loan him out?
Burnley are struggling in the Championship, and Vincent Kompany could also be in line for some January spending money.
And with just 15 goals to their name in 15 Premier League outings so far this season, strikers could be at the fore of Burnley’s transfer hopes, which could potentially push Obafemi down the pecking order even more.
The Clarets will want him to be playing regularly, especially after suffering a fairly long-term injury, and a loan move could be ideal.
And given his previous exploits in the Championship, a loan move to the second tier could prove ideal.
Of course, given Sheffield Wednesday’s league position, they may not be the most attractive option for Burnley or Obafemi.
But Rohl makes Sheffield Wednesday a much more attractive place for loan players and some more positive performances before January could really give the Owls an edge in January.
With £30,000-a-week to spend as well, and Obafemi currently earning £19,000-a-week at Turf Moor, the Owls could have a good chance of landing the Irishman, whose pace and poacher-type attributes, and Championship experience, would seriously improve the Wednesday front-line.
